The 2003 season may have been the height of Les Miles' arrogance. To his credit he had beaten the Sooners in 2001 and again in 2002 but that also brought out a strong sense of overconfidence in the Mad Hatter. In the preseason he said that it didn't really matter where they played OU (Norman or Stillwater) because he could beat them anywhere. In the week leading to the game he said that the best team in the nation and a really good team were going to play on Saturday and that we'd have to watch to see, "which one was which."
Oklahoma State fans bought into the hype as well. Many were touting Tatum Bell as a Heisman candidate and, led by Les Miles, they were demanding that the Sooners acknowledge them as one of OU's primary rivals. Unfortunately for them, they woke the sleeping giant.
The 2003 Bedlam game marked the first time since 1988 that both teams entered the game with a national ranking. At the end of the day only one team looked the part as the Sooners trounced Oklahoma State 52-9.
