In 1967 Chuck Fairbanks took over at the helm of the Oklahoma football program. He guided the Sooners to a 10-1 record that year and OU's 26-24 win over Tennessee in the Orange Bowl helped them finish the year with a #3 national ranking. The Vols ended up being crowned with the national title before the bowl season but that would be the last season a champion was crowned before the bowl games.
