College Baseball Preview | Oklahoma Sooners vs. Rutgers Scarlet Knights

Rich DeCray - SBN

Winners of two in a row, the Oklahoma Sooners will look to push their streak to five games by the close of the weekend. Fresh off a two-game sweep of Abilene Christian, OU now turns their attention towards the Rutgers Scarlet Knights.

Losers of two in a row, Rutgers comes to Norman with a 3-6 record. This season has been all about streaks for the Scarlet Knights who lost their first four games of the season before winning three games in a row. They then dropped the final two games of a three-game series against Old Dominion last weekend before traveling to Norman for a three-game tilt with the Sooners.

Brian O'Grady leads the team in every offensive category. His batting average is .471 and he's knocked in 7 RBI, belted 2 home runs, and has crossed home plate eleven times. Lou Clemente is batting .318 on the season and is the only other player on the roster with a home run. As a team the Scarlet Knights are batting .261 and have been struck out 49 times in nine games.

Howie Brey leads the way for Rutgers in pitching. He's built a 2-0 record in three starts this season and is sitting on a 1.04 ERA. In 17.1 innings of work he's only been hit on seven times and has fanned 10 batters while also allowing 10 to reach base on a walk. The Scarlet Knight pitching staff has a combined ERA of 6.08 and has seen 49 base runners reach on a walk. Kevin Baxter (0-1, 3.48 ERA) and Kyle Driscoll (1-1, 6.55 ERA) round out the weekend starters.

Mac James continues to lead the way for Oklahoma offensively. He's batting .457 on the year with 11 RBI and 12 runs scored. His seven doubles this season are the most in the Big 12. Hunter Haley (.372) leads the team in RBI count (13) and is tied of a Big Twelve leading four home runs. James and Haley are two of four Sooners batting .300 or better. They are joined by Taylor Alspaugh (.395) and Craig Aikin (.321). The Sooners have a team batting average of .287 which ranks them third in the Big Twelve, behind Kansas (.335) and West Virginia (.298).

Corey Copping has a 2-0 record for the Sooners in his two starts this season. He's sporting a 0.00 ERA and has fanned six batters on the year. Adam Choplick improved his season record to 2-1 last weekend. He's sitting on a 3.31 ERA. Jake Elliott will most likely round out Oklahoma's weekend starters. He has a respectful 2.79 ERA but is also the only member of the OU pitching staff with a losing record at 1-2.

The Sooner pitchers have a combined ERA of 2.5 and have struck out 113 opposing batters. Closer Ralph Garza, Jr made his Big Twelve leading ninth appearance of the season on Thursday against Abilene Christian. He has a 0.84 ERA on the year and has recorded three saves.

The Sooners and Scarlet Knights will kickoff their three-game series with a double-header on Friday. First pitch in game one is scheduled for 3:00 and game two will follow approximately thirty minutes after the conclusion of game one.
