Oklahoma Sooners Baseball | UCF Tournament Preview

The Golden Knights are 3-1 on the season and looking to defend their home tuft as the host team for this weekend's tournament.

Despite a little hiccup on opening day the Sooners ended their first home stand of the season in impressive fashion. Oklahoma scored a total of 55 runs through their first four games and lead in the Big XII in batting average (.335), runs, hits (63), home runs (7), and RBIs (47).

Juniors James Mac and Taylor Alspaugh are leading the way for Oklahoma's offense. Both players are batting over .500 for the season and the duo has combined for 17 hits, 12 runs, and 9 RBI. Behind them, seven other players are batting .300 or better, including Anthony Hermelyn who is at .444 on the year.

Coach Pete Hughes is going to keep his starting pitching rotation the same as last weekend, giving Jacob Evans another opportunity to record his first win of 2014. Evans was the only Sooner starter to get saddled with a loss last week. He left the mound, in the opener, with a 5.06 ERA having given up eight hits while also striking out four Seton Hall batters. Evans will take the mound in Friday's tournament opener against The Citadel.

Adam Choplick recorded a 1.50 ERA in his season debut, and win, on Saturday. In his six innings of work he punched out five batters which is the most among Oklahoma's starters.

Jake Elliott was a little sloppy late in his performance on Sunday but still left the mound with the win. He finished with a 3.6 ERA but walked four batters while striking out three.

The Citadel (2-2)

Don't let the record fool you. The Bulldogs' two wins came against Viginia Tech and then #16 Louisville in the Homewood Suites Tournament in Charleston, South Carolina. The Sooners will face junior lefty Logan Cribb who is sporting a 4.76 ERA but also fanned seven batters in 5.2 innings of work. As a team, the Bulldogs are hitting .270 and are led by outfielder Hughston Armstrong who is on a tear, batting .583 with with three runs scored and two RBI. OU opens the UFC Tournament against the Citadel at 11:00 AM on Friday.

UCF (3-1)

The Golden Knights lost their first game of the season on Tuesday night when the fell to 5-1 to Florida in Gainesville. Infielders Dylan Moore and Tommy Williams are both batting over .400 on the season with Williams being one of four players tied for a team-high four RBI. Oklahoma will face righty Spencer Davis who has a 1-0 record on the season with a 3.60 ERA. He struck out four batters in his five innings of work last weekend. Oklahoma faces Central Florida at 5:00 PM on Saturday.

Ohio State (2-2)

The Buckeyes have struggled from the plate this season with a team batting average of .235 in four games. Outfielder Tim Wetzel is batting a team-high .364 and has knocked in three runs on the year. Lefty Zach Farmer will face a powerful Oklahoma line up after struggling against Indiana State last Saturday. He has a 9.00 ERA and an 0-1 record on the year. The Sooners will play against Ohio State at 9:00 AM on Sunday.
