Sooners Slug Past Arkansas Pine Bluff With 16 Runs Off 20 Hits

New, 4 comments

The Sooners picked up Tuesday afternoon against Arkansas Pine Bluff exactly where they left off against Seton Hall on Sunday afternoon. Oklahoma blasted UAPB with 16 runs on 20 hits in Tuesday afternoon's opener to the two-game midweek series. The offensive onslaught was so severe for the Sooners that Arkansas Pine Bluff starter Humberto Zavala was bounced out in the first inning after giving up 6 earned runs. OU ended the opening frame with seven runs on the board, having had Craig Aikin, Hunter Haley, Sheldon Neuse and Niko Buentello collectively hit through the cycle in the inning.

OU added four more runs in the third and then five in the fourth to get to their total of 16 for the game. Nine Sooner batters recorded multiple hits in the game, including Haley, Buentello and Anthony Hermelyn who recorded three each. Haley went yard in the first inning, as the second batter to approach the plate for the Sooners, and then repeated the feat again in the fourth to take the team lead in both home runs (3) and RBI (9) for the season.

From the mound, starter Connor Buchman was on the hook for all six of the Lions' runs (only two of them were earned) after allowing four hits and ushering three walks in 3.2 innings, while also striking out three batters. It was his first career start as a Sooner pitcher. Junior Robert Tasin came in to relieve Buchman and ended up getting the win after going 1.1 innings. He was the first of five Sooner relievers who came out of the bullpen to pitch five scoreless innings in which they only allowed four combined hits and struck out six UAPB batters.

The Sooners and Golden Lions play again on Wednesday afternoon with the first pitch slated for 3:00 PM.
