The Oklahoma Sooners entered Saturday with a glimmer of hope and a shot at earning a berth in the Alamo Bowl. However, after an overtime loss, all hopes had effectively been squandered. Sporting an 8-4 record, Bob Stoops and company have accepted an invitation to play in the Russell Athletic Bowl. The game will kickoff on Monday, December 29th at 4:30 PM CST.
In a homecoming of sorts for Ty Darlington, the program reportedly will face the Clemson Tigers. The matchup pits familiar faces against one another as Brent Venables held an assistant position under Bob Stoops for 13 years.
Currently, Oklahoma boasts a 2-1 record over the ACC foe with the only loss coming in the 1989 Citrus Bowl and looks to make it 3-1 after a disappointing season. The two wins came in Norman during the 1963 and 1972 seasons.
On the other side of the equation, Clemson sits at 9-3 with losses coming at the hands of top programs like Florida St., Georgia, and Gerogia Tech. However, the Venables led defense stands a clear head above the rest with the top ranked defense in the nation.
This could be a difficult matchup knowing the struggles the Sooners have faced this season.
