There have been several stories, within the Big Twelve, to come out of the first month of the college football season. I don't think anyone saw the Oklahoma quarterback situation evolving into what it did. No one saw the Texas Longhorns getting off to a 1-2 start, and I'm not sure that anyone really thought that Texas Tech would be 4-0. However, the biggest story has to be what's going on in Waco where the Baylor Bears 3-0 and not even being challenged.
Ten touchdowns per game is the average for Baylor so far. With scores of 69, 70 and 70, the Bears are literally putting the competition away before the half and racking up eye popping numbers in the process. Baylor has the top passing offense in the nation with 444.3 yards per game and are seventh in the nation at rushing at 307 per game.
Its not just the Baylor offense that's making waves though. The defense has been outstanding as well by holding opponents to an average of just 7.7 points per game. The Bears are third in the conference against the pass (186.7 YPG) and second against the rush (110.3). They've only given up one rushing touchdown on the season and, while opponents have scored twice through the air, Baylor has nabbed five interceptions.
The competition hasn't been stiff for Baylor, through the first three games, and honestly they may not see any competition over the next four opponents (WVU, KSU, ISU, KU), meaning they'll more than likely be 7-0 when Oklahoma travels to Waco on November 7th. That's a proposition that should set Sooner fans, and the rest of the Big Twelve, on edge.
Kansas 13 - Louisiana Tech 10: By way of a 52-yard field goal by walk-on kicker Matt Wyman, as time expired, the Jayhawks have exceeded their win total from the 2012 season. Jake Heaps passed for 279 yards but was picked off twice. His 22-yard touchdown pass to Jimmay Mundine sparked a 10 point fourth quarter rally that let to the win.
Maryland 37 - West Virginia 0: As impressive as Baylor has been, the Mountaineers are just the opposite. This is a team that was setting the world on fire last season and has absolutely failed to reload this year. WVU quarterback Ford Childress was 11/22 for just 62 yards and was picked off twice.
Baylor 70 - Louisiana-Monroe 7: The Bears racked up 781 total yards of offense in the game with Lache Seastrunk averaging 15.6 yards per carry on his way to 156 yards and a score.
Texas Tech 33 - Texas State 7: The good news is that the Red Raiders won the game. However, the bad news is that for the second weekend in a row Texas Tech quarterbacks have struggled. Freshmen Baker Mayfield and Davis Webb combined for three interceptions, with Webb also throwing two scores.
Texas 31 - Kansas State 21: We have to give the Longhorns credit for winning this game after living under two consecutive weeks of scrutiny. However, it was a costly win linebacker Jordan Hicks suffering a season-ending injury and quarterback David Ash getting banged up once again.
