The Oklahoma Sooners capped off an 11-1 season in 1971 with a 40-22 trouncing of the Auburn Tigers in the Sugar Bowl. OU entered the game with a national ranking of #3 and the Tigers were #5. Both teams had high powered offenses, with Oklahoma grinding it out on the ground and Auburn using the arm of Pat Sullivan to attack through the air. However, it would be all OU on this day as the Sooners built a three-touchdown lead thanks to runs by Leon Crosswhite and Jack Mildren and a 71-yard punt return by Joe Wylie.
The story of the day though was the late Jack Mildren who led all rushers with 149 yards and three touchdowns on 30 carries.
