In 1969 Steve Owens became the second Oklahoma football player to win the Heisman Trophy. He was a consensus first-team All-American that season after rushing for 1,523 yards on 358 carries. Following his Heisman campaign he was selected by the Detroit Lions in the first-round of the 1970 NFL draft. In 1971 he became the first player in the Lions' franchise history to rush for more than 1,000 yards.
