OU Softball | One Former & Two Current Sooners Make Team USA

@SoonerSoftball

Just a little over two weeks after claiming this year's NCAA Softball national championship, several Oklahoma Sooners were back on that same Oklahoma City field trying out for the 2013 USA Softball National Team.

In an announcement from Team USA on Friday, we learned that one former and two current Sooners made the squad. It should come as very little surprise to see Keilani Ricketts and Lauren Chamberlain listed among those who made the cut, but senior to be Destinee Martinez also made the team. While this is a first for both Chamberlain and Martinez, Ricketts is a veteran when it comes to playing for Team USA.

More from the Team USA announcement:

The 18-person roster will regroup next month for their first competition, the World Cup of Softball in Oklahoma City July 11-14. Team USA will compete in three separate events in the United States, Canada and Puerto Rico. Following the World Cup, the Women's National Team is slated to compete July 16-22 at the Canadian Open Fast Pitch International Championship in Surrey, B.C., Canada and August 5-18 at an International Softball Federation (ISF) Women's World Championship/Pan American Games qualifier in San Juan, Puerto Rico.

As impressive as it is for head coach Patty Gasso to boast three players from her program on Team USA, there could have likely been more in fact. Michelle Gascoigne, Jessica Shults, and Brianna Turang have all signed professional contracts with the National Pro Fastpitch league since winning the national championship so they were not available to participate in the Team USA tryouts.

Regardless, there is obviously plenty to be proud of when it comes to OU Softball.
