With their win in Lubbock Monday night, the Oklahoma women's basketball team secured a No. 3 seed in this weekend's Big 12 Tournament. The women's conference regular season concluded Tuesday night and with it all of the seedings are now set.
The Sooners will face the No. 6 seed, West Virginia, in the last of four games which will take place on Saturday, March 9th. The game is scheduled for 8:30 p.m. (CST) and will be broadcast on the Fox Sports Network. For the first time, this year the women's tournament will not be held at the same time or location as the men's tournament. While the men will gather in Kansas City next week, the women travel to Dallas and will play this weekend.
Oklahoma, like they do all conference teams, has played West Virginia twice during the regular season splitting the two meetings with each team winning on their respective home floors. However, the Sooners struggled to win in Norman while WVU easily managed a blowout victory in Morgantown.
West Virginia presents a very difficult match-up as they are a team who plays with a physical style while also but are also quite athletic, both of which are things this Oklahoma team has struggled with all season.
There is a bit of a mixed history for the Sooners in this tournament having great success in some years, but also experiencing some unexpected early round exits. This is an Oklahoma team almost assured of an NCAA Tournament berth, so there is some question as to how much a deep run this weekend would actually help other than simply for seeding purposes. This is a depleted squad who has to be running on fumes, but if we know anything about Sherri Coale neither of those will be taken into account as they prepare for this weekend.
