It was bound to happen but that doesn't make it any less painful to see. Pepperdine got the best of Oklahoma's pitchers in the first and ninth innings to secure a 7-2 win and give the Sooners their first loss of the season.
Pepperdine's Nate Johnson hit a two-out, 2 RBI double in the top of the first to give the Waves the lead at the start. Oklahoma wouldn't answer until Matt Oberste scored on a Garrett Carey sacrifice in the bottom of the third to cut the deficit to 2-1. Oberste then tied the game in the bottom of the fifth with a solo shot home run over the left field wall but that would be it for Oklahoma's scoring.
The Sooners surrendered the lead back to Pepperdine in the next frame but were still within reach going into the final inning, trailing just 3-2. However, the ninth was when the wheels would fall off so to speak as the Waves put up four runs in order to get to the final of 7-2.
Jonathan Gray got tabbed for the loss after throwing six complete innings, allowing three runs on five hits while also striking out seven batters.
The rubber match game will be tomorrow at 1:00. Head coach Sunny Golloway announced that redshirt freshman Adam Choplick will get the start.
