OU Women Overcome Slow Start In Season Opener & Advance In Preseason WNIT

USA TODAY Sports

Much like the men earlier in the day, the OU women's basketball team overcame a slow start of their own to defeat Stetson 78-60 and advance to the second round of the 2013 Preseason WNIT.

Led (as usual) by a game high 24 points from Aaryn Ellenberg, the Sooners were able to eventually pull away in the second half.  Ellenberg was helped by a career high 17 points from Kaylon Williams who returns after missing all of last season when she suffered a torn achilles tendon.

Oklahoma hit only two of their fifteen three point attempts in the first half which was the primary reason for their somewhat modest nine point lead at the half.  They would improve upon that in the second half going 5-for-13 with Ellenberg hitting four consecutive three pointers during one stretch.

The only other Sooner to finish in double figures was Sharane Campbell with 10 points, though she did it on 3-of-14 shooting.  Senior point guard Morgan Hook, who returned to the court much earlier than expected after dislocating her thumb just a couple weeks ago, narrowly missed a double-double finishing with 11 assists and 8 points.

With the win, Oklahoma advanced to the second round of this year's preseason WNIT.  The Sooners will face Wichita State, who defeated IPFW 69-46, on Sunday at 2 p.m. (CT).
