The OU women's basketball team lost a tough one 97-92 in overtime to Louisville on Sunday afternoon in the championship game of this year's Preseason WNIT.
The Sooners failed to hold on to a modest lead at the end of regulation when they failed to abide by one of the cardinal (no pun intended) rules of basketball, stopping the ball. Louisville's Jude Schimmel went coast-to-coast for the game tying layup and then the No. 5 ranked Cardinals proved too much for the Sooners in overtime.
A late burst from Oklahoma with less than one minute remaining in the overtime period gave the Sooners, down just three points, two chances to tie the game and possibly send it into double overtime but it was not to be as both shots rimmed out giving Louisville the win.
All-American Aaryn Ellenberg once again led the team in scoring as she would finish with 22 points and as well as a somewhat surprising team (and game) high 12 rebounds. However, she was held without a single shot attempt until much too late in the overtime period which all but sealed Oklahoma's fate.
Sharane Campbell (19), Morgan Hook (16), Gioya Carter (12), and Kaylon Williams (10) all also finished with double figures in scoring, but it wasn't enough to overcome Louisville's advantage on the boards that led to way too many easy baskets.
Credit Sherri Coale's squad for rallying from a thirteen point deficit midway through the second half when they were in jeopardy of possibly being run out of their own gym.
It was a difficult loss, but one Coale can help this team learn from and use as a teaching tool for the team going forward.
The Sooners return to action Wednesday, November 20th when they will host UT Arlington with a 7:00 p.m. (CT) tip.
