Ryan Spangler waited long enough to find himself on the court earning valuable mintues after transferring to Oklahoma from Gonzaga. However, the experience against guys like Kelly Olynyk may have paid dividends for this budding star. After his performance against the Alabama Crimson Tide, Spangler is garnering recognition as Co-Big XII Newcomer of the Week.
In the season opener, Spangler recorded two career highs. The first coming by way of points scored (15) and the second by way of rebounds (12) marking what could be a string of double-doubles. As a fan, I am impressed with the hustle and physicality of Spangler as five of his rebounds came off the offensive glass. Second chance points play a major factor in conference play and Ryan is the type of player that is bound to get a handful.
Yet, the most impressive aspect of his game may be found in the fact that Spangler played 30 minutes without committing a turnover. In this fast paced offense, turnovers are inevitable. Keeping them down to nine for the duration of the game is a testament to the smarts and cohesiveness of this group.
