If you had any doubt about Oklahoma's post-season fate going into this morning's Big XII Tournament opener against Oklahoma State then you can breathe easy now. Facing the Big XII's Pitcher of the Year, the Sooners were held at bay for most of the morning. However, OU was able to counter with an excellent pitching performance from starter Dillon Overton and reliever Steven Okert to keep the Cowboys off the board.
Overton pitched 7.1 scoreless innings, striking out 8 of the 27 batters he faced, and then gave way to Okert who threw 1.2 innings of no hit relief, with two strikeouts, to get the win. In all, the Sooners fanned 10 batters and allowed just six hits in nine innings of work to allow for a dramatic conclusion in the bottom of the ninth.
OSU's Andrew Heaney looked every bit the part of the Big XII Pitcher of the Year with eight scoreless innings. He struck out eight of the 27 batters that he faced as well but it was that 27th batter who got to him. With the game scoreless going into the top of the ninth, Oklahoma's Garrett Carey stepped to the plate representing the winning run. Carey sent the ball sailing over the left field fence for his first home run of the season. It was just the third hit that Heaney had allowed on the day.
The Sooners now wait the winner of the Baylor/Kansas State game and will play their next round at 4:00 tomorrow afternoon.
