Oklahoma basketball coach Lon Kruger tweeted earlier this week that he was getting ready to hit the road for a recruiting trip. Coach Kruger will likely be looking for 2013 recruits, but there are still a couple spots open for a late addition or two in their 2012 class.
Multiple sites (OUHoops & ESPN's Sooner Nation) have confirmed that JUCO center Matt Korchek will be in Norman this weekend for an official visit. Korchek is 6'9" 215 pounds athletic post player who can get up and down the court in a hurry. Here are some comments on Korchek from his JUCO coach Jerry Carillo via pointguardu.com.
"He's 6'9, strong, athletic, he can run, jump, rebound above the rim, and he cover his man," Carillo told PGU. "He can sprint from rim to rim and he has a lot of upside. Right now he's having the most productive season of his life. He never put up numbers like this at any other stage of his career and he's leading a team now."
"Oklahoma offered him early, Missouri offered early, Pittsburgh offered with the intent to redshirt, New Mexico did as well," he added. "Auburn is recruiting him, they want him a lot, they called three times today for him. Arizona has not officially offered him. They're still evaluating him and they want to see more of him."
Korchek originally made a name for himself with a backboard shattering dunk in a tournament game.
It would be hard not to draw comparisons to Casey Arent, who was an almost identical situation for the Sooners this time last year. By all accounts, Korchek is much more athletic than Arent and the feeling amongst OU basketball fans is that Arent isn't so much a knock on Kruger's ability to evaluate talent, but rather a player Kruger almost had to take just for the body.
A couple other names to keep an eye on as other possible late additions to this 2012 class would be:
- 6'4" high school shooting guard Isaiah Cousins (NY) who according to Varsity Insider will be taking his first official visit to Oklahoma this Monday. Also according to Varsity Insider, Coach Kruger was at practice to watch Cousins on Wednesday. According to OUHoops, it's Kruger's second trip to New York in two weeks to visit Cousins so it would seem the Sooners are seriously targeting him.
- 6'5" JUCO shooting guard Devon Branch who, at 180 pounds, is very much a tall, lanky kid but does have very good athleticism according to reports. I think a natural comparison to his game would be current Sooner Cam Clark.
