Going in, we here at CCM thought this was a must win series for the Oklahoma baseball team. This is not your typical Texas squad, though don't take that to mean this is a poor Longhorns team because they're not, so it was a prime opportunity for the Sooners to get a rare win over their hated rival.
As it turns out, things could not have gone much worse.
After blowing a four run first inning and losing in extra innings Friday night, again getting an early lead only to see Texas pull away Saturday, the Sooners were basically manhandled Sunday afternoon in the series finale. To say it was a humbling experience for this Oklahoma team would be a gross understatement. Even in a "down" year for Texas, they come into Norman and so clearly outclass the Sooners it was embarrassing. The Sooners have now dropped five in a row and set themselves up with an obviously disappointing 0-3 start to Big 12 play.
This team has some major problems and this series only further exposed them as well as adding a couple more with injuries to both Tanner Toal and Erik Ross. Couple that with a bad start from Steven Okert on Sunday and Sunny Golloway using both Jordan John and Kindle Ladd for 100+ pitches in relief outings.
The Sooners return to play Tuesday in a mid-week two game set in Norman with Air Force. I can only imagine what Golloway will say to his team between now and then, but whatever it is it will need to be substantial. It's impossible to imagine how this team could be anything but incredibly down on themselves after this weekend.
