Texas Scouting Report

You can't look at this Longhorn team and not say they've improved. We're starting to see the swagger in the Texas players that disappeared somewhere in the 2009 BCS championship game. After a dismal 2010 season, and a rebuilding 2011 campaign, the Longhorns are once again confident and strong.

They are currently sixth in the nation in scoring offense at 46.8 points per game. David Ash has been handed the reigns of the offense and has responded with the second highest quarterback rating among starting quarterbacks in the Big XII. His 255.2 passing yards per game is fifth in the conference and he's thrown 11 touchdowns to just 1 interception.

There's no doubt that improved quarterback play is the catalysts that led to an offensive turnaround in Austin.

Defensively the Longhorns are a different story. Touted as one of the best units in the nation in the preseason, Texas is currently 66th in scoring defense (26.4 ppg). Opposing quarterbacks are completing 60% of their passes against the Longhorns for an average of 222 yards per game. That ranks them fifth in the Big XII in passing defense. Texas is taking it on the chin in the rushing game as well. The Longhorns are ninth in the conference against the run, allowing opponents an average of 4.7 yards per carry and 182.4 yards per game. Only Kansas is worse in the Big XII.

The Longhorns have speed in their return game. Marquise Goodwin is averaging 30 yards per kickoff return and D.J. Monroe 43.3 with on taken back for a score. Quandre Diggs is averaging 16 yards per punt return.

Kicking has been an adventure to Texas to this point of the season. Nick Jordan is 3-7 with a kick blocked and Anthony Fera is 1-2. That puts them at 50% as a team. Alex King is averaging 45.7 yards per punt.
