2012 five star defensive end and current Florida State commit, Mario Edwards, has been confirmed to be visiting the OU campus today. The Denton, TX star has been verbally committed to FSU since March, but recently decided he want to come see how they do things in Norman. Now before you get too excited, know that he's still considered to be a pretty solid verbal for FSU. However that said, the #1 goal in recruiting is always to get a kid on campus. Once you do that, anything can happen. Just think back to Durron Neal's situation, long believed to be a Mizzou lock, OU gets him on campus and suddenly he's pledging to be a Sooner.
So getting a player the caliber of Edwards on campus is definitely a good thing. I'm definitely not saying it leads to a commitment, but in recruiting you just never know for sure until that fax comes in on signing day. Now if Edwards is impressed by what the campus and facilities offer, the topic of conversation comes up that FSU is loading up on DEs, casually point out that DE is a huge priority for OU in 2012 and he'd be our first DE commit, and the coaches just so happen to show him our depth chart for next year which could give the strong impression that coming in and starting as a true freshman is certainly not unrealistic. Well then, things just might get interesting.
Now that's definitely a BIG if at this point, but like I said getting him on campus was a significant first step towards the possibilty of maybe (stressing maybe) convincing him to switch allegiances.
