Sooners pick up first commitment after star studded recruiting weekend

(More video available here.)

It was being billed as possibly the biggest recruiting weekend in the Bob Stoops era and while a couple of the big names weren't able to make it, the Sooners were not lacking for talent in the prospects they were hosting this weekend. And this Sunday afternoon has produced the first gift a week away from Christmas in the form of the state of Oklahoma's #6 overall player, CB Kevin Peterson.

Peterson received his scholarship offer just one week ago, but didn't need long to know OU was the school for him. He had been very vocal about wanting an OU offer and once he got it he didn't waste any time making his decision. As an OU fan, I always love when we get commitments from kids who you know were dying to become a Sooner. You just know kids like that are going to play their guts out for OU and as a fan that's all we can ever ask for.

Peterson also did an interview with ESPiN where he talked about the time he spent with Willie Martinez and how that influenced his choice. So for those of you who might have been thinking Martinez could be on his way out, this would look possibly discredit that theory.

Peterson played both running back and cornerback in high school, but there is no confusion about his future in Norman. He'll play defense and projects as a solid lock down corner. With his time at running back, you know he won't shy away from contact when coming up in run support. He also has excellent speed (reportedly in the mid to high 4.4 range) so he'll have that recovery speed in pass coverage. Has shown good hips, which are huge for a CB, and the ability to find the ball in the air, but will benefit greatly from the opportunity to focus on one position at the D-I level. Peterson turned down offers from Arizona, Iowa State, Oregon State, and Tulsa to become a Sooner.

Welcome to Sooner Nation Kevin!
