Oklahoma's New Found Red Zone Success: The Stats

Throughout the first half of the season, Oklahoma was found leaving points on the field. The lack of a power running game often resulted in field goal after field goal for this Sooner offense. Not only was this something that became a trend starting with the 2009 season, it would have seemed that there was no solution at the end of long and winding road. Time and time again, Sooner fans had the notion FGs were simply not enough considering the kicking game that OU fields each and every week. However, something changed at Kansas St. and the Sooners have been on a tear since implementing a few new formations for the red zone as well as 3rd and short situations. The coaching staff took note of the problem and a solution was proposed. In what first seemed like a "band-aid," has now become a staple of this Oklahoma offense.

Throughout the first seven games, Oklahoma might as well have flipped a coin once entering the red zone to decide if they were going to score on a field goal or a touchdown. In 38 trips inside the RZ, OU scored TDs 55.26% of the time while only scoring FGs 34.21% of the time. These numbers are a far cry from the likes of the the other BCS top teams.

After the implemenation of Blake Bell into what has become known as the Belldozer Formation or bunch formation with the use of two FBs, the Sooners have been near unstoppable (and that is without RB Dominique Whaley).

Date Opponent Surface Result Attempts Scores Score% TD TD% FG  FG %
10/29/11 Kansas St. Turf W 58-17 5 5 100.00 5 100.00 0 0.00
11/05/11 Texas A&M Grass W 41-25 5 4 80.00 3 60.00 1 20.00

The Sooners have scored 9 out of 10 trips inside the RZ with 8 of those being touchdowns. The number sets them at 80% which is a desirable number that competes with the BCS top 10. If this trend continues and Oklahoma can continue to stay right around that 80%+ mark, they will be a tough team to outscore.

In total the Sooners are scoring on 89.58% of their trips inside the red zone. On 48 trips the Sooners have scored 43 times with 29 TDs and 14 FGs.
