Time for my usual pre-season Texas rant. Sports Illustrated has done their part to elevate the Texas Longhorns to the Kings of the Hill. Days after the coaches debuted the Longhorns at #4 in their pre-season poll, Sports Illustrated places them on their regional cover as the team with the defense to win it all. This is the same defense that that lost three of four defensive linemen, two of three linebackers and safety Earl Thomas from last year's team.
In fairness, they do have more returning starters on defense (6) than Oklahoma does (5) but then again we're not touting Oklahoma as having the defense to win it all either. I was actually just fine when I saw the magazine cover because being on the regional cover sure seemed to work out well for Oklahoma State last year. Then I did a quick Google search and realized that perhaps Texas doesn't have the defense to win it all.
So, its actually the Boise State Broncos that have the defense to win it all. Whew! There for a minute I thought that we were actually going to have to endure another attempted Texas title run all the while hearing then wale and yell how much better they are than anything north of the state line when in reality they only beat the equivalent of a JV Oklahoma offense by a field goal last year.
Boise State definitely can be a player in the BCS. They have proven that not only can they make it to a BCS game but they can actually win (ouch! that was painful to write). So according to SI we could be looking at a BCS Championship game between the Longhorns and the Broncos, unless...
Oh man, now I'm really confused! So you're telling me that there are three teams that have the defense to win it all? Texas won't play Boise in the regular season and Boise won't play the Buckeyes who in turn won't play the Longhorns. So now we have a three-way tie for the team that has the defense to win it all and we all know how three-way ties have worked out for Texas in the past. In spite of that I don't see how an undefeated team from the WAC gets into the BCS championship game over an undefeated team from the Big 12 or the Big 10. So now we're looking at a Texas vs. Ohio State BCS championship game, unless...
We totally forgot about the defending champs! They have a defense to win it all as well. So now we're either going to crown four champions or just admit that its the preseason and we're just trying to sell magazines. Either way I'm fine to see the SI Jinx all over the Burnt Orange Nation. In fact, they're already feeling the affects of it. As if that wasn't already enough for Texas they also have to deal with this...
The man who has screwed up everything he's touched over the last 20 months has officially endorsed them.
