The Oklahoma Sooners are either nine innings away from a trip to the college world series or nine innings away from the end of the season. OU can attribute their success Sunday afternoon to several factors and clutch performances but none of them more so than the one turned in by Cody Reine. In Oklahoma's 10-7 victory over the Cavilers, Reine drove in 5 runs on 2 home runs.
Virginia ended their half of the first inning with a 2-0 lead but as we'd see all afternoon Oklahoma would answer. Trailing 2-1, Reine sent a three run shot over the left field fence to put the Sooners up 4-2. The Cavs tied it up in the top of the third in the the bottom half of the inning Oklahoma struck again. Garrett Buechele and Tyler Ogle started Oklahoma's half of the inning by getting walked. Caleb Bushyhead knocked in Buechele and the Ogle scored on a sacrifice by Danny Black."We are looking forward to competing tomorrow. It's been a tremendous series so far and I am sure its going to finish off being that way" - Sunny Golloway
Oklahoma pushed the lead to 8-4 in the bottom of the fifth off Reine's second home run of the day but Virginia drew to within 8-7 in the top of the sixth. That's when Max White put the final nail in the coffin with his own two run shot to produce the final score of 10-7.
Oklahoma's defense and pitchers played loose all afternoon. The Sooners committed no errors on the day but the Cavilers did get OU in a few jams. In almost every situation Oklahoma came out with the best case scenario as Virginia left runners stranded all day.
Jack Mayfield earned the win after facing 18 batters over 3.1 innings to record a 2.49 ERA. Game three is set for 6:00 p.m. (CST) on Monday evening.
