Oklahoma's offense was very good against a solid Texas defense for most of the day by using a variety of misdirection running plays, play-action passing and rolling the pocket. In the first half they used a bunch of creativity and fast paced play calling to score 21 points and build a 14-point halftime lead. In the second half the Sooners took a different approach in trying to run more of a ball control offense and trust their defense. Its a move that came close to backfiring but wasn't as close as some pundits are trying to make it out to be.

The networks are making it out to sound like Aaron Williams' fumbled punt set up a game winning score for the Sooners but that couldn't be farther from the truth. Had Williams not muffed that punt, Texas would have only had 1:08 left on the clock to drive 59 yards to score a touchdown and then get a two-point conversion just to move the game to overtime. In short, Kevin Wilson's game plan worked. It may not have been pretty and it may have caused anxiety but it worked. Let me show you how.

A week after UCLA literally ran over Texas, Oklahoma found that balance was the key to success against the Longhorns. With Oklahoma's receivers able to create separation and DeMarco Murray dancing down the sidelines Kevin Wilson was able to keep Will Muschamp guessing with a balanced attack resulting in a 28 point/369 yard performance for Oklahoma's offense. Here are three other things Oklahoma did  extremely well on offense.

1) Protected the football - With the way the game flow turned out giving Texas a short field off a turnover could have been disastrous. Landry Jones made some amazing passes but one of the best things he did was put the ball where only his receivers could catch it for most of the day.

2) Ran the ball - Don't let the stats fool you. Oklahoma lost some major rushing yards on the fake field goal and then the busted play where Landry Jones fumbled the ball out of bounds. When you look at DeMarco Murray's actual rushing stats he averaged 4.7 yards per carry to go along with his 2 rushing touchdowns. Now that's a key to success right there.

3) Made Texas pay for their mistakes - Oklahoma was clearly the more disciplined of the two teams and the Sooners made the Longhorns pay for it. On three of Oklahoma's four scoring drives the Longhorns committed crucial penalties at crucial times. All of them led to Sooner touchdowns.

Grading It Out

Position

Comment
QB
A-
Landry was spot on at times by making what seemed to be impossible throws. However, he also had a few moments when he didn't go through his progressions or rushed his throws.
RB
A
Oklahoma needed a 100+ yard performance and that's exactly what DeMarco Murray gave them, along with two touchdowns.
OL
B+
Gave up a couple of sacks and QB hurries but for the most part had a solid afternoon.
WR/TE
A+
Kenny Stills has officially arrived! He's got to be the most exciting true freshman receiver to play since Bob Stoops arrived. Oh, and I think that James Hannah is still standing wide open in the back of the end zone.
Coaching
C+
Communication errors and bad timing on some play calls caused a comfortable lead to turn into a bit of a Maalox moment. Still don't see benefit of the fake field goal.
