Scouting The Tulsa Golden Hurricane

In 2008 Oklahoma and Tulsa had two of the most prolific offenses in the country. So far in `09 Tulsa has looked the part once again and will bring an offense that is averaging 40 points per game to Norman. Sophomore quarterback G.J. Kinne has completed 67% of his passes for 521 yards and 5 touchdowns. He's a dual threat quarterback who can tuck the ball and head down field. So far this year he's rushed the ball 26 times for 130 yards.

Stopping the rush has been the strength of Oklahoma's defense but that shouldn't concern Tulsa much because they have no running game to speak of. Kinne is their leading rusher and the next person behind him is receiver Damaris Johnson who has 59 yards on 7 carries. Johnson leads the team in all-purpose yards and has 161 receiving yards to go with his rushing attempts. If you're looking for an actual Tulsa running back then Jamad Williams is your man. Williams has carried the ball 22 times for 58 yards.

Another player to keep an eye on in Tulsa's offense is receiver Slick Shelly. He's caught 9 passes for 133 yards and 2 touchdowns.

Tulsa's defense is just as responsible for their 2-0 start as the offense has been. The Golden Hurricane are holding their opponents to 268 total yards of offense and under 12 points per game. Led by defensive end Cory Dorris Tulsa has 10 sacks in two games. Dorris has played above his freshman status by logging 5 tackles, 2 forced fumbles, 2 fumble recoveries and 2 sacks.

Dorris is complemented on the field by senior linebacker Mike Bryan. In Tulsa's first two games this season Bryan has recorded 18 tackles (5.5 for loss) and an interception. In the secondary cornerback Jon Destin has snagged 2 interceptions and logged 5 tackles.

Like Oklahoma Tulsa is defensively strong against the run. The Golden Hurricane are holding opponents to 47 rushing yards per game. In passing defense they aren't great but not too shabby either. Tulsa holds their opponents to 221 yards of offense through the air. Surely there should be something there that OU can exploit.
