Scouting The Baylor Bears

Oklahoma travels to Waco tonight to face a Baylor team that is struggling to say the least. The Bears have lost 5 games in a row and have dropped to a 3-6 mark in Big 12 play. Baylor has an 11-3 home record and are currently tied with Texas A&M for the conference’s 8th spot.

The Bears are very good on offense but very bad on defense. They rank third in the Big 12 in scoring (80.7), fifth in field goal percentage (47%) and second in three-point shots made per game (8.7). Baylor is led by Curtis Jerrells who scores an average of 16.4 points per game while dishing out 5.3 assists. Other guys who would pose scoring threats are LaceDarius Dunn (16.2), Kevin Rogers (12.9), Henry Dugat (12.2) and Tweety Carter 10.7.

The downfall for Baylor this season has been two-fold. First, they have a tendency to shoot themselves out of games. They play a very fast paced but undisciplined brand of basketball. Once the ball is advanced across half court there isn’t a spot on the floor that a Baylor player won’t take a shot from. This works great for them when the shots are falling but even on nights when they shoot average it gets them beat.

Secondly, it seems that at times this team has no idea of what defense is. In the previous meeting in Norman OU shot 66 percent in the first half and the game was over at the break. The Bears scored the first 5 points and then OU out scored them by 32 points over the next 15 minutes. What was true in that game will carry over into tonight’s contest. The team that makes defensive stops will win and you have to say that favors the Sooners.
