NCAA Baseball Tempe Regional Open Thread

Baseball America has their Tempe Regional Preview  up. Below is what they said about Oklahoma and I honestly can’t disagree with any of it.

Oklahoma was the most controversial at-large selection after going 9-17-1 in the Big 12 and failing to win a series all year against a regional team. But the Sooners did win games against Texas A&M and Missouri in the Big 12 tournament, getting a complete-game, 12-strikeout masterpiece from ace sophomore righthander Andrew Doyle (8-4, 4.38) in the win against the Aggies. He gives Oklahoma a decent chance against Vanderbilt in the opener. The Sooners finished the regular season with a .316 average in Big 12 play, the best mark in the conference, with seniors Mike Gosse (.359 with seven homers and 48 RBIs) and Aljay Davis (.352 with 13 steals) leading the way. That pair and leadoff man Jamie Johnson (.350 with 20 steals in 21 tries) really make the Sooners go.

Meanwhile azcentral.com  has their team capsules posted for the Tempe Regional and its obvious they didn’t do their homework. As for the regional itself, Oklahoma is supposed to get started at 3:00 against Vanderbilt. Andrew Doyle is crucial to Oklahoma’s chances for success in this regional. To have any chance at all the Sooners have to start at 1-0 in my opinion. Doyle can get OU past Vanderbilt if he performs like he did in the conference tournament.

Sooners win 8-5 over Vanderbilt. Doyle wasn't as impressive as he was in the Big 12 Tournament but he was good enough.

Arizona State knocks off Stony Brook 9-7 setting up the Sooners and the Sun Devils in the late game Saturday night.

Vanderbilt 9 - Stony Brook 4 - Stony Brook is eliminated from the tournament and Vanderbilt now waits for the loser of tonight's OU/Arizona State game.

Arizona State 15 - Oklahoma 3 - Sooners get hammered by the Sun Devils and now face a rematch against Vanderbilt in Sunday's elimination game. The winner gets ASU and the Sun Devils must lose twice to be eliminated.
