OU/Texas Could Determine Who Plays For Conference Championship

The lower seeds continue to win in the Big 12 Baseball Championship and that’s good news for Oklahoma because they are as low as you can get seeded at #8. After the #5 seed Texas Longhorns pounded the top seeded Texas A&M Aggies 15-9 Thursday night at the Bricktown Ballpark 8th seeded Oklahoma pulled off another stunner to set up a duel with the Longhorns on Saturday for a chance to play for the championship.

The day after the Missouri Tigers hit a walk-off base hit in extra innings to beat the Texas Longhorns Oklahoma’s Jaime Johnson hit a walk-off double in the bottom of the 9th to propel the Sooners to 2-0 in pool play and within a game of playing for the conference championship. Standing in their way are the Texas Longhorns who a day after losing to the Tigers lit up Texas A&M with 15 runs on 17 hits.

Texas took two-of-three from the Sooners earlier this season with Oklahoma only winning the middle game. In those three contests, played in Norman, OU plated a combined 19 runs. I believe that the Sooners can hit Longhorn pitchers but the key will be Oklahoma’s pitching staff. If we continue to see production like we have the last three games then the Sooners have a fighting chance but if the staff returns to mid-season form then they will be in trouble.

First pitch in the OU/Texas game is scheduled to be thrown at 9:00 am Saturday morning. Both teams will have Friday off as the other side of the bracket plays.
