A broken big toe on his right foot will keep Reggie Smith from playing in the Fiesta Bowl against the West Virginia Mountaineers. Smith suffered the injury in the Big 12 championship game against Missouri and was replaced by Dominique Franks.
Because the Mountaineers' offense is geared towards the run Oklahoma's defense won't suffer from the absence of Smith's pass coverage ability as much as they would if they were playing a pass first or even a balanced offensive attack. Franks has the speed to be a dangerous punt returner and he has experience doing it this season.
Obviously Oklahoma's defense won't be 100% without Smith but if the Sooners are going to lose a defensive player against an offense like West Virginia's its better for it to be a cornerback than a linebacker, lineman or safety.
