Overlooked last weekend with OU's Big 12 Championship run in football was the Sooners 63-35 win over TCU in basketball on Saturday. It was by far the most impressive win of the season for Oklahoma who is still struggling to find an offensive identity but are playing outstanding defense.
Villanova will provide the strongest challenge of the season to Oklahoma's nation leading 49 game non-conference home winning streak. The Wildcats are 6-1 and are led by fifth-year senior forward Curtis Sumpter and his 19.1 points a game. Sumpter also averages 5.0 rebounds and is shooting. Senior Mike Nardi averages 14.2 points and a team-high 4.6 assists while shooting .436 from 3-point range (17-for-39) and a perfect 19-for-19 from the free throw line. Sophomore forward Shane Clark has come off the bench in each game to average 10.9 points and 3.6 rebounds. He is shooting .522 from beyond the 3-point arc (12-for-23). Freshman guard Scottie Reynolds and sophomore forward Dante Cunningham both average 7.7 points a contest. Reynolds initially committed to the Sooners but bolted from his commitment when Kelvin Sampson left for Indiana. It will be very interesting to see how he is received tonight at Lloyd Noble.
This is a measuring stick game for the Sooners. They found out in Hawaii that they has some serious areas in which they needed to improve on and seemed to show vast improvement against TCU but the Wildats will be a step up in competition.
