Hawkins on the Sooners

Here's a few excerpts of what Colorado Head Coach Dan Hawkins had to say about the Oklahoma Sooners and their upcoming game this weekend in Norman. Bonus points will be awarded to those who can decipher the first two quotes and make some sense out of them.

On Oklahoma's loss of Adrian Peterson...
"I just think that is the assumption sometimes, people think `Oh hey they are going to drop off.' Well, it's Division I football, there are scholarships, there are other guys that can play, and they will have other guys that can play. So I think to make that assumption [is wrong], and again if you watch their offensive line, they are pretty good up front."

"You know, guys like you and I could probably get some yards in there. They do a nice job of blocking people, they will have capable backups, and they have a good system. They aren't just going to let you lay in there and hammer on people. Their quarterback is doing a nice job and they've got good receivers, I just think you can overplay that sometimes."

On whether team morale has improved after the win...
"Maybe to some degree, but it was kind of like "Groundhog Day." You know, you wake up and go `Geez, we turned the ball over down there, we could have scored another touchdown [and we could have tried] to get a return going on [our] punt and kickoff return teams,' so its always easier said than done, but I think you have to stay out of the gutter and off of the mountain top and stay in the middle and keep plugging.

"I think they were a little bit better, obviously it's a boost in confidence, a little bit more reaffirming that way. But again, we always try to be fairly consistent in what we are doing, and not get too caught up in the highs and the lows of all that. Just try to carry that message through and I think they are pretty good about that."

On Oklahoma's defense...
"Well, it kind of reminds me of when I went swimming with the sharks in South Africa, it is scary. Obviously, Coach [Bob] Stoops has always been one of the great defensive coaches in the country. They've got it all, they are big, tall, fast and athletic, they can pressure you, they don't give up big plays, they are good in every single way and you don't look at them and go `Oh, we'll get them on that.' You just don't, you've got to go earn your yards, earn your first downs and earn your touchdowns because they are not going to give you anything."

On Oklahoma QB Paul Thompson...
"I think he does a nice job, he's accurate, I think when you look at it and say they've got a former wide receiver playing quarterback you might think he would not be that way. But he's a big, tall kid who can throw it and he's accurate. He can hurt you with his feet as well, he's done a really, really good job.

I think for most people to think when they lost Rhett Bomar they aren't going to be able to do anything but hand it to Adrian Peterson, that has not been the case at all. They've thrown the ball, so he is very good in that area."
