Missouri And Nebraska Given A Deadline?

"Nebraska has until 5 p.m. on Friday to tell us what they're going to do," one school official said, according to the The American-Statesman. "The same deal for Missouri. They have to tell us they're not going to the Big Ten." A Dallas Morning News report also cited a deadline for the Cornhuskers but said it was within two weeks.

Time To Perk Up And Pay Attention - Conference Realignment Is Happening Whether You Like It Or Not

One thing is abundantly clear. There is not a consensus agreement among the Big 12 presidents and AD's regarding the future of the conference. Speculation of a possible breakup of the 14-year-old Big 12 exploded this spring when the Big Ten said it might expand and Nebraska and Missouri indicated interest. Big 12 commissioner Dan Beebe and Texas president Bill Powers had been scheduled to brief reporters at the end of the day on Thursday, the third day of the league’s spring meetings. But after a separate meeting of the presidents ran an hour long, Beebe emerged to say—as he was pursued by reporters into a waiting elevator—that the news conference would be on Friday. "The board is still in session. We won’t conclude until tomorrow and we’re not going to have any kind of comments about anything the board has been considering or acting upon until tomorrow." He refused to elaborate. In Thursday’s joint meeting of athletic directors and presidents, Oklahoma’s Joe Castiglione said the ADs all gave their recommendation about whether the league should stay together. Apparently, the unanimity that many members were hoping to forge proved elusive. "We all had a chance to express our thoughts," Castiglione said when asked if any of the athletic directors indicated they might want to leave. So does that mean not everyone was united? "Everybody expressed their thoughts," he said.

Stoops: OU Is Attractive To Any Conference

TULSA, Okla. (AP)—Oklahoma coach Bob Stoops believes the Sooners will end up in a good position no matter what happens with schools switching conferences. Stoops said Tuesday night he thinks Oklahoma would "be pretty attractive" to any conference, considering its TV appeal, a run of appearances in the Bowl Championship Series and a streak of sellouts at its 85,000-seat stadium. Stoops also believes the Big 12 could add new teams if needed "or if not, we may end up going somewhere else." Regardless, Stoops says he’ll leave it up to university president David Boren and athletic director Joe Castiglione to decide what’s best for Oklahoma.

Nebraska Willing To Listen To Other Conferences

Perlman wants Husker fans to know one thing — the first hat he wears in any conversation about conference realignment will be red and white with an N on it. He and Nebraska Athletic Director Tom Osborne are solidly together on potential courses of action. "My instinct and Tom's instinct isn't just to sit around and wait to see what bad things happen to you," the chancellor said. "We're certainly talking about what options we have." [...] Perlman said he wants the Big 12 to succeed. But that doesn't mean a move by Nebraska to any other power conference has been ruled out. "I don't think anyone can dismiss anything out of hand," he said. "If you take the wildest predictions about mega-conferences — 16 is the number you see most, but 24 has been floated though not publicly — we certainly have to act in the interest of Nebraska."
