The Night the Season Died

Oklahoma's 2007 football season didn't just end on Saturday night it was taken out back and killed Wednesday night by the West Virginia Mountaineers. In yet another BCS game the Sooners lost to an underdog. Oklahoma's offense took the first half off before finally moving the ball in the second half but at that point it was too little too late for OU because they literally couldn't catch up to West Virginia.

Noel Devine's 65 yard touchdown run in the 4th quarter was the final nail in Oklahoma's coffin

In a season where the Sooners had been so dominant at times we can't say that we hadn't seen this type of ineptness before. Anyone remember Colorado, Iowa State or Texas Tech? We knew that OU had the potential to do this we just tried to hide it in the very back of our minds. It's just that after beating the #1 team in the nation in the Big 12 championship game we all expected more than what we got in the Fiesta Bowl.

There's plenty of blame to go around for this loss and while I refuse to join the witch hunt and abuse the coaching staff I will say that they do very much share some of the blame but certainly not all of it. Since when did we stop blaming players for their own mistakes?

Here's What the Coaches Are Not Responsible For:

*    Players Not Being Focused and Not Having Their Heads in the Game - To quote our good friend Colorado Head Coach Dan Hawkins, "It's division I football. It's the Big 12. This ain't intramurals!" I have to get my little league team focused for the game but these guys have earned division I scholarships by being focused athletes. The coaches can prep them all they want but in the end it is the players fault if they have mentally checked out during the game.

*    Granger and Holmes being Suspended - You can't coach against selfishness! Both of these athletes made selfish decisions that resulted in them not being on the field tonight and we're fooling ourselves if we still think they weren't missed.

*    Missed Tackles - You can devise schemes that put players in the right position to make plays but when Darien Williams fails to make the tackle the fullback runs 57 yards for a score.

If Williams makes a tackle then we wouldn't see this picture.

*    Blown Assignments - How does Pat White pass to a wide open Darius Reynaud for a 21 yard touchdown? Because DJ Wolfe blew his assignment!

*    Failure to Make Plays - There were some good plays called Wednesday night, both on offense and defense, they just weren't executed properly. Unfortunately it needs to be said that coaches call the plays they don't make them. Missed blocks, dropped passes, missed tackles are all on the players and not the coaches.

*    Penalties - The Sooners were penalized 13 times for 115 yards. Ridiculous doesn't sum it up.

Now, Here's What the Coaches Were Responsible For:

*    Bowl Preperation - It's time to reevaluate how the Sooners prepare for bowl games. Obviously something isn't right and its painful that this wasn't acknowledged after last year's Fiesta Bowl.

*    Adjustments - Some good points were brought up on the game thread about Oklahoma's failure to make first half adjustments to get the offense cranking earlier.

*    Decision for the Onside Kick - Why? Before that kick West Virginia had a total of six offensive plays for only 10 yards in the second half and the Sooners outscored WVU 9-0 in the first 8 ½ minutes of the third quarter drawing within 5 points of the Mountaineers. The onside kick shifted the momentum back to WVU.

*    Chasing Two - I still don't get it. Why did they attempt to go for a two point conversion twice?

Its unfortunate that people get up in arms and call for heads to roll after every loss. In fourteen games this season the Sooners only walked off the field only three times without a win. In all three instances it was a slow start by the offense that was the catalysts to the defeat. Here's a bit of reality.

Sam Bradford - Freshman
Jermaine Gresham - Sophomore
Juaquin Iglesias - Junior
Manuel Johnson - Junior
Malcolm Kelly - Junior
Demarco Murray - Freshman

Include in that the fact there were no seniors along the offensive line and you have a lot of underclassmen contributing on an offense that ranked second in the country in scoring. Youth is good because it means that the future is bright but it means that there is a lot of growing up to do. This is a young team that needs to do a lot of maturing. Hopefully Wednesday night was a step in that direction and there are more championships to be one. I can guarantee you this. Break up this coaching staff and the chances of those championships are greatly reduced.

The 2007 season showed a lot of promise and brought much joy to the Sooner Nation. Unfortunately the end was painful and tragic and will be what the season is remembered by.

A very sane opinion.  I fear you will be drowned out by the crazies...

Gotta Laugh!
Ok, so you wrote that you didnt want to talk about USC anymore???  Maybe you should because the Trojans not only would have beaten every Big 12, Big 10, SEC team, but even those big bad Big East teams.  If you go to Normannow.com the person who comments about the 2008 Sooner schedule calls it weak.  While USC opens in Virginia and then home against Ohio State.  Sooners need to schedule some real teams, win a bowl game and then you can talk smack about the Trojans.  Until then...SHUT IT!

Oh by the way, the Trojans are 5-1 in their 6 straight BCS games.  The Sooners are 0-4 in the last 5 years of BCS games.

Good Night NOW!

Why talk now?
You make a very valid point, but you are talking to fans of a team that your team beat 3 YEARS AGO!!!

Opening the season up against UVA?  They lost to Tech, big whoop

Schedule
Yes, UVA lost to TECH on a neutral field.  But lets see the Sooners schedule a real out of conference team.  Wow you guys play the Bearcats at home and then 2-TBAs.  Let me make a prediction...The first TBA willbe Middle Tennessee STate that you will put 70 points on, inflate your players stats and then get mad when they are not considered for the Heisman.  The 2nd team will be might be tougher like Buffalo on the road.

All I am asking is that teams like Oklahoma finally play a Top 10 out of conference team.  Is that too much to ask??????

Still Don't Want to Talk About Them!
Next season will take care of itself. I was talking about this season and the pathetic match-up the Rose Bowl gave us to watch.

The Trojans are clearly better than the Sooners but they are at best the 4th best team in the country this season who won a bowl game against a team that should be fringe top 25.

Since you brought up weak schedules I just wanted to say that I doubt that the Sooners will lose to a 48 point dog while playing at home against a backup quarterback next season like you guys did this year.

But thanks for showing up four hours late to throw some smack around.

YOu still should be talking about them!
Ahhh yes, STanford the game I knew would bite SC.  But since the Sooners lost to TCU to open last year and a WAC Team in the Fiesta Bowl, I dont think you can really talk about the STanford game.  ANd if you dont want me to talk smack, why even have this forum???  REally is it the Trojans fault who scheduled the Rose Bowl???  No, but whoever they play, they win.  Keep the money and recruits coming on in!!!!!!

Telling comment
"Keep the money and recruits coming on in!!!!!!"

How appropriate that a USC fan would say this.  When does the McKnight family get their free house?

Please Bring the Smack
I don't mind at all just as long as it is  focused (you're jumping ahead to next season and then back to the 05 season to try to dance around a USC loss that was the most embarrassing of any team this season) and on time (showing up 3 hours after the game to talk trash is weak. If you've got something to say do it before during and then after the game.)

41 point fav vs a 6 point fav
When you lose to someone that you are a 41 pt favorite against, then your team deserves a lot of criticism, as opposed to losing to someone that you are a 5-6pt favorite. Big difference there.

Hopefully, the NCAA will finally come out with some ruling on the Reggie Bush free house sweepstakes, and rightly the University of Spoiled Children will lose a national title and Bush will lose his Heisman. It will be nice , although annoying to hear the West Coast press and Herbstreit crying about it.

Bowl games
I'm as disappointed as I've ever been with the way the Sooners played last night. And, like most folks, I'm still scratching my head about some of the playcalling (2-pt conversions, on-side kick) that handed the momentum right back to WV. It's especially disheartening that the O line couldn't do any better and that the defense couldn't stop the run given that everyone knew that, offensively, WV's gameplan is to run and then run some more. However, all in all, it was a good season as a fan. I got to see some great young talent and a lot of promise for the future. This year's team was a great team but very inconsistant. As they mature and get more comfortable they should lock in and play more consistently over the course of the season.

So I'll take my lumps from all the Ohio State fans (I live just outside of Columbus) and listen as USC fans and the like run their mouths. I still thought we had a good season and I'm proud of the fact that my team ended up in a BCS bowl even if they did get walloped. WV is no Stanford but they were pretty darn good.

Second 2 Point conversion
Maybe I'm just an idiot but what was the logic behind the second two point conversion.  Wouldn't an extra point make it a 12 point deficit and a 2 point conversion make it 11??

HAHAHAHAHAHA!!!!!!!!
And OU thought they deserved to be in the National Championship. I laugh at all the OU fans who seriously thought that. They don't even deserve to be in a BCS bowl game if their gonna keep losing them (by the way losing the last 5 straight bowl games). Well Texas can't say the same seeing how we can win ours so maybe OU needs to stop whinning and grow some balls and actually try to win a bowl game.
