Reggie Smith Expected to Declare For NFL Draft, Lofton Still Considering

Tomorrow is the deadline for underclassmen to declare for the NFL draft and the latest word that I've received is that cornerback Reggie Smith is expected to declare and linebacker Curtis Lofton is still toying with the idea.

As stated previously all of the offensive linemen are expected to return so the key losses for the offense, at this point, are Joe Jon Finley, Malcolm Kelly, and Allen Patrick.

If Reggie Smith and Curtis Lofton were to got it would decimate the Sooners defense that is already losing Lewis Baker, Steven Coleman, Alonzo Dotson, Demarrio Pleasant, Marcus Walker, Darien Williams, John Williams and DJ Wolfe.

If there were any way to keep just one of these underclassmen I would put all my eggs in the Curtis Lofton basket. With the lack of depth at linebacker OU desperately needs him back in 08.

UPDATE: Curtis Lofton has declared and is leaving Oklahoma to enter the NFL draft. I don't think I need to rehash how strong of a blow this is to Oklahoma's defense.

Mike Reed
That's a big loss, but last spring Lofton wasn't even going to start. Mike Reed is a better athlete, let's just hope that he can learn the system, which it looks like is something he has a lot of trouble with.

Reed
Was also hindered by his wife getting an illness. As a result he had to take some time off from football to care for her and their kids.

Maybe he can get back on track this spring.

Last Season
Just like going into last season there were questions about Linebacker and the D-Line. Someone will just have to step up like someone (Lofton, English) always does. Same with the Secondary (Franks & Jackson)

Lofton will be missed
but hopefully the holes on D will be filled adequetly.

Next seasons success will be heavily dependent on the offense. IMHO

I agree with you Blood
The offense will have to carry the load next season.

Let's try to be positive....
Look, I'm not happy about all of the talent leaving the defense. But I wasn't happy about losing Lehman, Calmus, Cody....etc...etc... I really think that the defense is going to surprise folks next season. I live in Ohio and all I heard all winter....all spring....was how bad the Ohio State defense was going to be due to loss of personnel. Low and behold they end up one of the top two defenses in the country this past season. (Which sucked for me because I am about the only Sooners fan here besides my wife and kids) But defenses can surprise you. These kids can come out of nowhere and make a difference. I remain optimistic. Also, I hope my Buckeye fan neighbor gets explosive diarhea during the Ohio State home opener.
