Alright Sooner Fans Let Us Know How You Feel

I don't know about you but I feel like I just got kicked in the gut and had my lunch money taken. It was all right there on a platter for the Sooners to take - the Big 12 South Division title, #3 BCS ranking with potential of moving up and going to the national championship game. It was all there and the Sooners pushed away from the table refusing to partake in it.
The game couldn't have started any better for OU. On the 5th play of the game Lendy Holmes intercepted Graham Herrell and took it to the house for a quick 7-0 lead and the Sooners were off to the races. So we thought.
On the 10th play from scrimmage Allen Patrick fumbled was Sam Bradford was injured making a tackle on Marlon Williams who had recovered the fumble. It was all over from there because without Bradford under center Oklahoma's offense would sputter and their defense demoralized by Graham Harrell's 420 passing yards leading to a Tech to a 34-27 upset. Mix in injuries to defensive end Alan Davis and running back DeMarco Murray and you have the perfect ingredients to the worst night of the season for OU fans.
I could try to put on a positive spin and say that OU is still in control of its own destiny as far as the Big 12 championship goes, and I would be right, but I just don't feel like it right now. Mostly because of the rash of injuries tonight I'm not sure who is going to be able to play against Oklahoma State next week.
I've also had visions of the 2006 Texas Longhorns dancing inside my head. Colt McCoy get's injured in a road game at Kansas State on their next to the last game of the season and then they go on and lose the following week at home to their in-state rival. Frankly, I'm scared to death of the irony. That's how I feel. How about you?

Playcalling was Our Downfall
1. Head Coaching - Halzle looked like a deer in the headlights for three quarters, and definitely appeared to have a limited playbook despite having as much time in the system as Bradford. I don't know how many snaps gives his backup QB during the week, but it appears that its not enough. OU also had 4 blowouts to start the season (not to mention the A&M and Baylor games) where Halzle only managed to get 8 attempts. So in 2 seasons as the primary backup, Halzle made 10 throws in game action. It seems like this could have been managed better. (To put it in perspective, Nichol already has 7 attempts in his career and don't get me started on blowing his redshirt.)
And what happened to Stoops' cojones? There was a lot of punting/kicking on fourth and short - he might want to look at Leach's success in this area.
2. Offensive Coordinator - I have never been a big fan of Kevin Wilson, and this game showed why. There is no consistency in personnel from week to week - where where Gresham and Murray early? His refusal to run early in games also gets maddening - I feel like Stoops must eventually yell at him and demand to run. Even then, his play-calling consistently put the offense in 3rd and long with an inexperienced QB.
I feel the offensive system has not really progressed since Long (and maybe as far back as Mangino) left. What does Wilson bring to the table as an OC? I would like to see a change here.
3. Defensive Coordinator - I will somewhat defend Venables: OU's strategy in recent years has been to keep Tech in front of them and make the tackles. But Crabtree is a beast and this strategy did not work in the first half. After that, the damage was already done. However, I do feel like the creative/aggressive blitzing we have seen in year's past has just not been there this year. I was secretly hoping that Mike Stoops would get fired and come back, but that's not going to happen now.
It's going to be hard for the team to get up for OSU - I'm worried about next week.
Great blog - let's get ready for basketball season!

Sleepless night
I would also guess that the coaches would take points (FGs) when behind because Tech is the type of team that cannot control the lead (fast-break offense, no clock control). OU, despite the break in continuity at QB, despite the porous defense, despite the penalties, and despite the strange darkness surrounding Lubbock and Buddy Holly's ghost, STILL had the opportunity to pull even.
Even my wife (no offense to her) can diagnose OU's biggest problem... the porous defense. This was OU's poorest defensive performance against a Leach team that I recall. Injuries to three different defensive ends have complicated matters. OU got no pressure on the QB until late in the 4th quarter, and I don't think they registered a single sack all night.
Despite the carnage that limped and was carted off the field, OU can still win the South Division by winning at home next week. OU is not national championship material at this point (but so few teams are this year), but if you told me OU would be in this position before the season started, I would have been very pleased.
Nonetheless, I guess I was restless because this was the type of year where the NC game could have just drifted right into OU's lap.

Welcome to the Machine Winston!
To me the worst play of the night was the botched fake punt. It set up Tech's only second half score and if you take that away from the Red Raiders then things could have been very different.
Bottom line is that this is a very young team. They can still go out and win a Big 12 Championship and a bowl game. Then start next season ranked as one of the top teams in the country.

what does it take
1)good assistant coaching
2)team preparation
3)crummy secondary play
4)non existent run blocking
and the constant
1)crappy self inflicted penalties
2)crummy fumbling
3)not waking up till the 4th qtr
4)losing in games we are picked to win
5)getting blown out by good and crappy teams
Listen to his teleconference on Sunday afternoon. Non-chalant, nose stuck up in the air attitude. I like Coach Stoops and would trade him for any other coach, but give me a break. He should be lighting a fire under the staff and players asses about now.
