How all 128 FBS college football teams fared against expectations

+

With the college football regular season wrapped up, we compared this year's results to the preseason expectations from the sportsbook 5Dimes. The top and bottom of the list have some obvious names. Air Force, Georgia Southern, Memphis, UTEP and Western Michigan were the biggest overachievers this year, finishing 4.5 wins above expectations. The biggest overachievers from the power conferences were TCU, Georgia Tech and Arizona, tied and 3.5 wins above expectations. Another surprising name at the top of the overachievers? UAB. The university dropped football despite the Blazers finishing tied at 13th nationally with 2.5 wins above Vegas' expectations. One-win SMU was the biggest underachiever in college football this year, finishing with 4.5 fewer wins than expected. However, South Carolina was the biggest underachiever of the power-conference teams, with 3.5 wins below its preseason projection. Michigan had three wins fewer than expectations, while Northwestern, Oklahoma, Vanderbilt, South Carolina, Texas Tech, Syracuse and Washington State all struggled to meet expectations, as well, finishing with 2.5 fewer wins than expected.

Big 12 Basketball Power Rankings: Everyone Keeps Winning

+

The theme last week in the Big 12? Just keep winnin'. No conference team suffered a loss last week. Granted, no one outside of Kansas really played anyone, but it's easy to stub your toe in early-season nonconference play. If you're going by top-to-bottom depth, there is no doubt the Big 12 is the best conference in the nation right now. Take a look at where they stand compared to the other Power Five (granted, that title means way, way less in basketball) conferences:

Per NewsOK "OU dismisses men’s hoops support staff member"

+

Oklahoma basketball strength coach Jozsef Szendrei has been dismissed after the OU compliance staff discovered an NCAA extra-benefit violation, sources confirmed Monday evening. The violation came during the men’s basketball team’s trip to the Bahamas for the Battle 4 Atlantis tournament late last month, according to sources with knowledge of the situation. A booster provided cash to a traveling staffer, who was supposed to pass the money along to players.

As the Oklahoma Sooners emphatically opened up their Big 12 season, it was TaShawn Thomas’ presence down low that proved again to be the major element that OU was lacking a season ago.

Russell Athletic Bowl Study Hall: Clemson 40, Oklahoma 6

As with the Ole Miss-TCU game, I felt really, really sorry for OU's defense. The Sooners gave up a long touchdown on Clemson's first play of the game, and Cole Stoudt certainly had more success in this game than he did for good portions of the year. But including sacks, Stoudt still only averaged 7.4 yards per pass attempt -- better than it should have been, but not amazing -- and the Clemson ground game went nowhere. OU's defense played well enough to keep the Sooners in the game ... and the OU offense was just a horror show. (I could also have said this about Clemson's defense for about half of this season.)

Oklahoma 63 - Kansas State 66 | Recap From The Other Side

The Kansas State Wildcats (9-7, 2-1 Big 12)...well, they pulled off what was statistically the most improbable feat of their season (yes, that includes going to Allen Fieldhouse and securing a victory), traveling to the Lloyd Noble Center in Norman and knocking off the (#16/#18) Oklahoma Sooners in overtime, 66-63. K-State was a 14-point dog coming into the contest, and Kenpom.com had Oklahoma listed as a 94% favorite. We weren't supposed to win. But that's why they play the games.

Big 12 Basketball Power Rankings: This League Is Madness

Raise your hand if you have any idea what's going to happen game-to-game in the Big 12 conference. If your hand is raised, sorry, but you're lying. With every team playing no more than three games, only two, Kansas and Iowa State, are left undefeated. Texas is good, right? Well, they were number one in these rankings last week. Spoiler alert: They're not this week. The Horns got blasted by 21 to Oklahoma last Monday. They followed that up with a loss at Oklahoma State.
