Monday Morning Bulletpoints -- 8/18/14

  • During Matt and Rich’s podcast with ESPN.com’s Jake Trotter, a good bit of conversation was spent upon the difference that the resolution of Dorial Green-Beckham’s appeal would have for the Sooners. Mr. Trotter’s take, paraphrased, was that the addition of DGB would turn OU’s on-paper vulnerability into a strength, and turn them into the only team without a weakness on paper. How true do you think that is? Would the subtraction of Frank Shannon change your opinion that WR is our only on-paper soft spot?
  • Again from the same podcast, there was some good conversation about how closely Oklahoma and Baylor compared. Mr. Trotter even averred that he might have put Baylor as his favorite to win the conference if our tussle wasn’t being played in Norman. He cited favorably the differences in the matchups between last year and this one. One thing that surprised me, however, is that he never mentioned the changes to Baylor’s O-line, and how that will affect Briles’ plans.
  • I like a good Sonic chili dog, but as a former Chicagoan, their Chicago dog is unworthy.
  • According to Wikipedia, OU’s first opponent of the season, Louisiana Tech, is "the only university in Louisiana to be designated as a National Center of Academic Excellence in Information Assurance Education and Research by the National Security Agency (NSA) and the United States Department of Homeland Security (DHS)." If the NSA says somebody’s good, I believe them -- they’ve listened to the phone calls.
  • (Full disclosure: I did my grad work at Tulane, so I may be snarky about other Louisiana schools.) (Especially LSU.)
  • The game will be available on pay-per-view. Because football works the way it does, however, at least you’re not paying for the 91 seconds it took Mike Tyson to knock out Michael Spinks.
  • La Tech’s coach is Skip Holtz. Yes, his father is "that" Holtz. His first coaching gig was as a grad assistant to Bobby Bowden at Florida State, and he has previously led small schools to big victories – when he was the coach at USF, they started the 2011 season by beating Notre Dame in South Bend. So he’s got a better record against the ‘Domers than our coach.
  • As of last night, HolaKyle’s YouTube video of Oklahoma’s Sugar Bowl highlights has 174,199 views. So fess up: how many do you think you account for?
  • Grantland’s really been doing great work this week. Their reporter’s first-person account of his time in Ferguson, MO, is definitely worth the read. But I stumbled across their article on the Ray Rice kerfuffle, and I think it’s worth reading.
  • Peace and love, Sooners fans. Winter is coming. (And by "Winter," I mean "Gameday.")
