Sooners Drop Desert Finale To Gonzaga 6-4

A pitcher's duel quickly turned into a slugfest in Oklahoma's finale at the Arizona State Classic in Surprise, AZ. Unfortunately it was a game that saw the Sooners fall short, dropping their weekend record to 2-1.

After the two teams went scoreless through the first four and a half innings, Oklahoma cracked the goose egg when Mac James scored off a Kolby Carpenter sacrifice to right field. Gonzaga answered by posting three runs in the top of the sixth but Oklahoma answered back in the bottom half of the inning by pushing across Craig Aikin, Sheldon Neuse, and Niko Buentello to regain their advantage at 4-3.

After a stalemate in the seventh the Bulldogs exploded for three more runs in the top of the 8th to take their final lead of 6-4. Oklahoma would put runners on in the eighth and ninth innings but wouldn't be able to take advantage in either inning.

Oklahoma's final rally attempt failed when Craig Aikin hit into a double play, with runners on the corners, to end the game. Taylor Alspaugh led the team in batting by going 3-of-4 from the plate with an RBI. Aikin and Hermelyn joined Alspaugh with having a multi-hit game by going 2-of-4 at the plate.

Freshman pitcher Jake Elliott is saddled with the loss. He pitched 7.1 innings, giving up 5 runs off 5 hits while striking out 4 of the 27 batters he faced. Ralph Garza, Jr. came into the game to pitch 1.2 innings of relief. He gave up a run off two hits and recorded a walk and a strikeout.

The loss drops Oklahoma's season record to 7-4 and ended a two-game winning streak. The Sooners are scheduled to play a two-game home series against Abilene Christian beginning on Tuesday.

Sooners Take 8-4 Win Over Santa Clara

Shaking off a rough start, the Oklahoma Sooners won their second consecutive game in Surprise, AZ on Friday night by taking down Santa Clara. It wasn't easy, and at times it wasn't pretty, but at the end of the day it as Oklahoma's seventh win of the season.

The Broncos took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first and would hold on to it until the third inning. Craig Aikin led off the frame by drawing a walk and then tied the game when Hunter Haley doubled to left-center field. Haley would then give Oklahoma the lead when he scored off a Niko Buentello double two batters later and then the Sooners never looked back.

Haley would come around the bases again in the fourth, along with Kolby Carpenter, to increase Oklahoma's lead to 4-1 and then the Sooners would add an insurance run in the 8th when Mac James scored on an Aikin sacrifice.

Not going away quietly, Santa Clara narrowed the game to 5-4 in the bottom of the eighth on a three-run blast by Casev Munoz. With the pressure on, Oklahoma answered by putting three runs on the board in the top of the ninth to push them back to a four-run lead.

"For a young team we did a good job at not panicking and just running our offense", coach Pete Hughes said about his team's performance.

Sooner starter Adam Choplick got the win to improve his season record to 2-1. "He beat them with his fast ball tonight," Hughes said about starter Adam Choplick. At one point in the game, Choplick sat down thirteen consecutive Broncos batters. His final stat line read, 6.1 innings pitched, 4 hits, 1 run, six strike outs in 26 batters faced.

Kyle Hayes came in relief of Choplick and fanned two batters but was also responsible for the three-run home run in the bottom of the 8th. Closer Ralph Garza, Jr. didn't allow a hit and struck out one in the bottom of the ninth to secure the win.

The Sooners were led offensively by Hunter Haley who went 3-of-4 from the plat, scoring twice and knocking in a run. "Hunter has been playing very well. He's been our most consistent guy", Huges said after the game. Haley was joined by Buentello, Anthony Hermelyn and Mac James in recording multiple hits for the game. Aikin and James also had multi RBIs. Oklahoma recorded a total of twelve hits and drew five walks in the game.

Up next for OU is the host Arizona State Sun Devils on Saturday evening. First pitch in that game is scheduled for 5:00 CST.

Copping Helps Sooners To Shutout Victory In Opener

Oklahoma's first game in Arizona turned out to be one of their better performances of the year. Taking advantage of opponent errors and knocking the ball around the park helped lead the Sooners to a comfortable 9-0 win over the Jaspers.

OU struck for four runs in the first, three more in the third, another two in the fourth and then coasted the rest of the way behind strong pitching performances. Hunter Haley, Sheldon Neuse, Niko Buentello and Anthony Hermelyn each crossed home plate twice in the game while Neuse, Mac James, and Hector Lorenzana recorded multi-hit games.

Manhattan starter Matt Simonetti was bounced after three innings after giving up seven runs off five hits and four walks. Joe Jacques came in relief for Simonetti but was quickly rung up for two runs as well to get the Sooners to their game total of nine.

Corey Copping was masterful in his six innings of work, striking out four Manhattan batters in his six innings of shutout work, and was supported by Connor Buchmann, Alec Hansen, and Hayden Jones out of the bullpen to preserve the shutout. Copping improved to 2-0 on the year and still maintains a 0.00 ERA.

Next up for the Sooners is Santa Clara in a Friday evening contest that is set for a 5:00 (CST) start.
