Sooner wrestling update: OU drops one to Northern Iowa and beats Oregon State

The Sooners have wrestled in two dual meets since the last wrestling update. I'll keep this one short and sweet. OU dropped a narrow 19-17 decision to #7 Northern Iowa. The Sooners suffered upsets at 125 and 141 pounds. At 125 Jarrod Patterson was tied 0-0 with 7th ranked Dylan Peters in the 2nd period and had accrued about a minute of riding time, when Patterson's right knee got bent unnaturally. Though clearly injured at that point Patterson gamely continued wrestling and lost a 4-1 decision. Losing Patterson would be a huge blow to OU's hopes of a trophy finish at the NCAA tournament and the fear at the time was that Patterson's knee was seriously damaged. However I've read online that Patterson made the trip to Oregon State for the next dual (although he didn't wrestle) and the injury wasn't serious. The loss at 125 was a big factor in OU losing the meet. Cody Brewer gave #1 ranked Colon all he could handle in the 133 match, losing 5-7. Colon scored most of his points in the first period, but Brewer dominated the 2nd and 3rd periods, scoring 2 takedowns on Colon. A great confidence builder for Brewer. At 141 Nick Lester had a small lead on Joey Lazor and got stuck. In wrestling pins happen quickly and unexpectedly at times, and this is the match that I'm officially saying lost OU the dual meet, giving Northern Iowa 6 big points. The rest of the matches proceeded as expected until the final match between heavies. Northern Iowa had a 19-14 lead and a pin by young OU heavyweight Ross Larson would have sealed the victory, but Larson struggled to beat his old HS nemesis Blake Cabell. Long story short OU got handed their first dual loss of the season. Hats off to Northern Iowa for wrestling tough and minimizing bonus points on the part of Oklahoma.

OU next traveled to Corvallis Oregon to face the Oregon State Beavers. OU escaped with a narrow 20-18 victory over the unranked Beavers. The dual started off at 285 pounds and Ross Larson suffered an upset loss (6-2) to Dhesi. Larson's offense never got going in the match and Dhesi wrestled very solidly. At 125 pounds backup Shawn Williams was pinned in the 2nd period by Pat Rollins. OU trailed at this point 9-0. Cody Brewer came out at 133 pounds and dominated his opponent 13-4, but was frustrated by his opponent's obvious stalling during the match. The Beavers brought in a hometown referee and he refused to call stalling on Beaver wrestlers, while warning OU wrestlers repeatedly if they went 30 seconds without tilt or turn attempts. I hate that kind of thing. Anyway, long story short the rest of the matches went as expected, with the highlight match being Kendrick Maple's 8-6 win over a tough Scott Sakaguchi.

OU heads into the final few weeks of the season with some questions. Will freshmen Larson, Glass, and Chaid pick up their game and contribute at nationals (indeed...will any of them qualify?). Will Jarrod Patterson fully recover and earn AA status? Will the good or bad Nick Lester show up the next couple months? I think OU still has a great shot for a top 5 finish at trophy at NCAAs, but things are definitely going to have to swing OU's way in the next couple months. For now OU is ranked #4 in the Intermat rankings with it's highest ranked wrestler being Andrew Howe at 174 pounds. Howe is looking very impressive, btw. His technique is the best I've seen from any wrestler in the NCAA this year, and that is saying something. OU is hosting the Big 12 wrestling tournament this year, try to make it to the meet if you can. OU celebs, such as Switzer and Stoops, show up and support the wrestling team on a fairly frequent basis. Head on over guys, you'll get to see the Sooners kick some butt!
