It appears I lied to C&C Machine with my statement the Sooners wouldn't see action again until Oregon State! Suffice to say that the schedule I had access to was wildly inaccurate (and on the Soonersports website, haha!). Long story short the Sooners travelled to Ames, Iowa to face the #17 ranked ISU Cyclones and came away with an impressive 27-11 victory while registering 7 wins out of 10 matches.
The match scores are below, chart courtesy of trackwrestling.com . #8 Cody Brewer is continuing a strong Sophomore season and raised his record to 14-2 for the year. 12 of his matches have been either technical falls or pins. Nick Lester moved up to #10 in the Intermat rankings this week as he raised his season record to 13-4 with a dominant 14-0 major victory over impressive ISU freshman Gabe Moreno. Kendrick Maple moved up to #3 in the rankings with his dominant 10-1 over 2 time NCAA qualifier Luke Goettl. Maple is 13-2 on the year and seems to be rounding into the form he had last year on the way to his NCAA title, but he has a tough opponent in Logan Steiber from Ohio State if he plans on repeating his championship. Justin DeAngelis moved into the Intermat rankings at #19 this week with his win over NCAA qualifier John Nicholson. Freshman Clark Glass was outclassed badly, 13-0, by #10 Michael Moreno. Andrew Howe, #1 in the rankings, blasted Weatherman in a 22-7 technical fall. Howe should be a top candidate for the Hodge Award given annually to the top NCAA wrestler. He is 14-0 with bonus points in 11 of his wins, and has beaten a tough NCAA champion in Chris Perry from OSU. Howe has a career record of 108-8 thus far and is a 3 times All American and one time national champion in his own right. Danny Chaid pulled off a big upset defeating 2 time NCAA qualifier Boaz Beard. In fairness to Beard he's not operating at full capacity at this point, but it's still a big win for Chaid and his confidence level. #3 Travis Rutt suffered his first loss of the year to tough #2 Kyven Gadson in a 3-1 SV match in a battle between All Americans. Rutt is now 14-1 on the year. Heavyweight Ross Larson was dominated 13-2 in his match by Quean Smith in a big upset for ISU. Larson attempted several big moves and was stuck each time. That's the problem with Larson's high risk/high reward style...he enjoys a lot of success with it and gets a lot of pins, but sometimes the guy he's wrestling is ready for it. Larson dropped from #14 to #18 in the rankings. #5 Jared Patterson won the last match of the night in typical dull (and dominating) Patterson style, 5-0 over unknown Kyle Larson. Never heard of Larson before, but he must be pretty solid if Patterson didn't beat him worse.
The Sooners are looking very solid heading into the last half of the season. Coach Mark Cody was pleased with the Sooner's efforts at ISU and will definitely have the Sooners ready for the homestretch. OU's next action is Jan 19 against #7 Northern Iowa in Norman. The dual will feature several bouts with both wrestlers ranked in the top 20, but the premium matches of the evening will be matches between the #5 and #7 wrestlers at 125 pounds, and the #1 and #8 wrestlers at 133 pounds. Should be a good one, I'm picking the Sooners to win 22-11.
