Oklahoma vs. Kansas | Championship Game Thread

Not a final pairing most people would have probably picked heading into the Big 12 Tournament, Oklahoma and Kansas will square off Sunday for the tournament championship.

Both teams have expended a number of pitchers over the course of the last three days, Oklahoma more so with their extra innings affair on Saturday, so Sunday is very likely to be a group effort from a pitching standpoint.

First pitch is scheduled for 1:00 p.m. (CST) and can be seen on Fox Sports Network or heard on Sportstalk 1400.

Sooners Advance To Championship Game

After blowing a four run lead in the bottom of the ninth, it looked like Oklahoma was destined to miss their second consecutive Big 12 baseball tournament championship game. When they blew another lead in the tenth it seemed even more certain. However despite all of their efforts to blow it, somehow the Sooners fought back each time and finally took a lead in the eleventh inning that they would not relinquish.

Jake Fisher started the game for Oklahoma but only lasted three and a third before getting pulled with the bases loaded. Kindle Ladd would come on in relief and pitch very well, getting out of said bases loaded situation as well another five innings worth of work.

A Garrett Carey bases loaded double in the fourth plated three and put the Sooners up 4-0. They would add what at the time seemed like an insurance run in the fifth and to the ninth we went. That's when things fell apart for the normally reliable Jake Evans who would allow the game tying runs (though two were charged to Ladd) and send the game into extra innings.

Ralph Garza Jr. would come in after Evans and blow his own chance for a win when he allowed a game tying run to score in the tenth. Finally, it was Kyle Hayes who proved capable of getting the final necessary out and send the Sooners on to tomorrow's championship game.

Oklahoma vs. Kansas State | Game Thread

After falling to the Wildcats in their regular season series finale, Oklahoma faces off against Kansas State with a Big 12 Tournament championship game appearance on the line.

Jake Fisher is expected to get the start for the Sooners who should also have plenty of fresh arms out of the bullpen if necessary.

Coming into tournament play, many believed Oklahoma needed to win at least two games to feel somewhat comfortable about their NCAA Tournament chances. They've managed to accomplish that, but obviously a Big 12 championship game appearance would only help to enhance their resume.

Should be a good game with first pitch scheduled for just after 12:30 p.m. (CST).

Sooners Cruise To 8-0 Win Over Texas Tech

Oklahoma posted their second consecutive shutout, a feat last accomplished by the Sooners way back in 2009, to open Big 12 Tournament play with a 8-0 win over Texas Tech. Oklahoma combined late inning scoring with solid pitching to coast their way to what proved to be an easy victory.

Senior Dillon Overton got the start on Friday and was good but not great as he continues to work his way back from a late season injury. The lefty went five innings scattering three hits while striking out five and walking six. Ralph Garza Jr. came on in relief of Overton and was incredibly effective over three innings of work facing just one over the minimum number of batters. Kindle Ladd came on to pitch the ninth and finish things off for the Sooners.

The offense may have taken a while to get going, but once it did the OU bats caught fire. Maintaining their modest 1-0 lead heading into the final two innings, the Sooners exploded for seven runs in the final two frames. Two in the eighth and five more in the top half of the ninth sealed it for OU.

Perhaps the most encouraging sign for an offense that was struggling mightily prior to tournament play was the balanced offense from Friday's lineup (box score). Four different Sooners had multiple hits in the game and six different batters were responsible for OU's eight runs driven in.

With the win, Oklahoma is now 2-0 in pool play and will face the #1 seed Kansas State Wildcats on Saturday at 12:30 p.m. (CST). No matter what K-State does in their game later today, Oklahoma will have to win to advance to Sunday's championship game. Because of the weather induced change in the tournament format, if the two teams were to finished tied with 2-1 records in pool play the higher seed automatically advances (which would obviously be K-State).

Expect Jake Fisher to get the start much like he did to close out the regular season on a Sunday start in Manhattan where the Sooners avoided a series sweep.

Big 12 Baseball Tournament: Texas Tech Vs Oklahoma

After a 3 1/2 hour delay to beginning of the conference tournament, Oklahoma Sooners and Baylor Bears took the field. Getting off to the start they wanted from the mound, Sunny Golloway and his ballclub walked away with the win. Looking to go 2-0 in their pool and keep the title hopes alive, the Sooners will take on the Texas Tech Red Raiders. This time around, the offense may need to be more of a factor.

Gray Dominant In OU's 2-0 Over Baylor

Despite a first pitch that came nearly three and a half hours after the originally scheduled start time, Oklahoma starter Jonathan Gray looked every bit the potential No. 1 overall MLB draft pick he's been projected to be.

Gray threw a complete game shutout in the Sooners Big 12 Tournament opening 2-0 win over the Baylor Bears. The OU ace allowed just three hits over his nine innings of work while striking out twelve and walking none.

What little offense there was in the game for either team came early with a Jack Mayfield double scoring Craig Aikin from first base in the bottom half of the first inning. Three consecutive singles by Max White (who would later score), Matt Oberste, and Hector Lorenzana would produce Oklahoma's second and final run of the game in the third inning.

After that it was all Gray who regained his dominant form after a two less than typical, at least by his standards, outings in his most recent starts.

Oklahoma returns to action in their respective pool Friday against Texas Tech with another early start time of 9:30 a.m. (CST).

Big 12 Baseball Tourney | Day One Open Thread

Obviously Oklahoma has already played (and won), so I'm not entirely sure how much interest there is from others with respect to the rest of today's game.

But we're not ones to exclude anyone here, so consider this your hangout spot for the rest of Thursday's games.
