Sooner Baseball Travels To Austin To Face Longhorns In Three-Game Series

The two best pitching staffs in the Big 12 go head-to-head this weekend as Oklahoma travels to Austin to take on the Texas Longhorns. The Sooners are putting their conference best 5-1 record on the line in their fist road series against a Big 12 opponent. Meanwhile the Longhorns are trying to dig their way out of the conference cellar and improve on their 2-4 record.

Sooners Take Series From Texas With 4-2 Victory

When you put two teams against each other who have the two best pitching staffs in the Big 12 then you're due for some drama. Narrow victories have been the theme for the baseball version of the Red River Rivalry. Oklahoma earned a 2-1 win on Friday night before Texas came back on Saturday to blank the Sooners 1-0, setting up a rubber match on Sunday. Why would we expect the theme of the series to change on Sunday as Oklahoma surged back from a 2-1 deficit to take the game, and the series, from Texas.

Like they did on Friday night, Oklahoma jumped out to a lead but unlike Friday the Sooners would surrender it and then have to mount a comeback. Freshman Kolby Carpenter scored in the top of the first on a throwing error by Texas pitcher Nathan Thornhill to give Oklahoma a 1-0 lead. Texas would respond in the bottom of the third when Erich Weiss tripled to left field, scoring Ben Johnson and Brooks Marlow.

The score would remain at 2-1, Texas, over the next four innings as each team allowed just one hit through that stretch. Then, in the top of the eighth, Oklahoma went back to work. Jack Mayfield, the lead-off batter, reached on a single and was advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt laid down by Craig Aikin. A wild pitch moved Mayfield on to third and then a single by Max White brought him home to tie the game at two runs apiece. Carpenter singled to left field, advancing White to second and giving Hector Lorenzana the opportunity to bring in the go ahead run. His double scored both White and Carpenter to produce the final score of 4-2.

Texas went with just two pitchers, Nathan Thornhill and Corey Knebel, producing eleven strikeouts and allowing eight hits. Oklahoma went by committee to get through the Sunday rotation. The Sooners used five arms, producing eleven strikeouts and allowing just four hits. Starter Adam Choplick recorded a team high five strikeouts in his 2.2 innings of work but was also on the hook for the two Texas runs. Billy Waltrip ended up getting the win after pitching to, and striking out, just one batter. Jacob Evans struck out two Texas batters in the final two frames to record the save.

The win gives Oklahoma series victories over their first three conference opponents and keeps them in first place in the Big 12 at 7-2. However, you have to wonder about the Sunday starter position and if the Sooners can settle there instead of needing to use a committee like they did on Sunday. It got the job done but is it viable for the long haul?

Oklahoma plays again next weekend when they face the Baylor Bears in Waco.

Rubber Match | Game Three | Open Thread

It's hard to put into words how big this Sunday game is between Oklahoma and Texas. As cliche as it sounds, it's about more than just this one game.

To say Texas has dominated the series between the two teams would be a discredit to the word 'domination.' It's almost more mental for this Oklahoma team than anything else at this point.

And Saturday's performance at the plate could not possibly have done anything to help their confidence. Add to the fact their Sunday starters have been, um, questionable so far throughout the season.

The stakes surrounding this Sunday's series deciding game are significant, join us here as we watch to see if the Sooners can secure their first series victory over Texas for the first time ever under Sunny Golloway.

First pitch is scheduled for shortly after 2 p.m. (CST) and the game can be seen (for the small handful of you out there who actually have it) on the Longhorn Network.

Longhorns Even Series

If you're a fan of defensive baseball and great defense then you've most likely really enjoyed the first two games of the Oklahoma/Texas series. After downing the Horns 2-1 on Friday night, Texas bounced back to shutout the Sooners 1-0 on Saturday. Dillon Overton pitched eight innings, giving up one run on five hits while also striking out six, in the losing effort to drop his season record to 6-2.

Dillon Peters was nearly perfect from the mound for Texas. He went 7.2 innings, allowing no runs and just two hits, to earn the win. Behind him closer Corey Knebel pitched 1.1 perfect innings of relief.

Texas scored the winning run in the bottom of the fifth when freshman Ben Johnson singled to center field which allowed Mark Gottsacker to score from third. The loss was just Oklahoma's second in conference play and puts the Sooners in the unique position of needing to win a Sunday rubber match to take a series. In the first two conference series Oklahoma won both on Friday and Saturday, sowing up the series before Sunday.

The Sooners faced a Sunday game against Pepperdine earlier in the year with the series tied at 1-1. Oklahoma ended up taking that game 8-1 and thus winning the three game series. Game time for Sunday's rubber match is 2:00 pm.

Sooners Take Game One From Longhorns

All good things must come to an end, and with Friday night's 2-1 win over the Longhorns, in Austin, Oklahoma's Matt Oberste saw his 30-game hitting streak come to an end. Doesn't mean that Oberste wasn't productive in the game though. His sacrifice in the top of the first inning scored Craig Aikin to put the Sooners up 1-0 early in the contest.

Texas tied the game in the bottom of the third when Mark Gottsacker cam home on a wild pitch by Jonathan Gray but Oklahoma went up by the final score of 2-1 in the top of the sixth when Anthony Hermelyn scored Kolbey Carpenter on a single to center field.

The theme of this game was the pitching though. Jonathan Gray earned his sixth win of the year by going 6.2 innings, only giving up seven hits and a run while striking out eight batters. In relief, Jake Fisher went 1.1 innings, allowing just one hit, before Jacob Evans closed out the game with a perfect ninth inning.

From the other dugout Texas wasn't bad from the mound either. Starter Parker French went 5.1 innings, giving up a run off five hits and striking out three Sooner batters. He was the first of five pitchers Texas used on the night and the effectively held Oklahoma to just seven hits and ended the longest hitting streak in Oklahoma baseball history.

The Sooners will put Dillon Overton on the mound Saturday in an effort to secure their third consecutive conference series this season. First pitch in game two is at 2:30 and will be televised on FSN.
