If there is one thing that the Oklahoma Sooners need, it is size in the paint. After coaching an undersized team to a twenty win season and an NCAA Tournament appearance, Lon Kruger is back at work, pulling a commitment and letter of intent from Edson "Beast From The East" Avila.
Avila is a 6'10 forward originally from Thomas Jefferson High School in The Bronx, NY. However, he would make a long trek to unfamiliar territory at Seward County Community College in Liberal, Kansas. Around the country, differing styles of basketball emerge and The Bronx is certainly unique.
If you are looking for a physical rebounder and shot blocker to clog up the lane, Edson Avila is fit for the job as he pulled down 5.8 rebounds a game and denied 32 shots in 30 game played. He will need to add a bit of weight to his 220 frame to compete with some of the other bigs in the Big XII Conference.
Yet, don't count on him to be simply a defensive body on the floor. Avila attempted 231 field goals on the season during his sophomore campaign as part of the Saints and connected on 134 of those to end the season shooting 58% from the floor while averaging 11.4 points per game.
Welcome to Sooner Nation Edson Avila and best of luck next season!
