Sooners Suffer First Conference Setback

The Kansas Jayhawks jumped on Oklahoma early on Saturday afternoon and then rallied late to give the Sooners their first setback in conference play. With starter Adam Choplick unavailable due to tenderness in his shoulder, freshman Corey Copping drew the start and struggled mightily. He only faced five batters and four of them reached base, two of them off doubles and two of them from being hit by a pitch.

Ethan Carnes came in to relieve Copping and got off to a good start by getting the first batter he faced to ground out. However, he then gave up back-to-back RBI singles causing Sunny Golloway to go to his third pitcher of the first inning in Billy Waltrip. Facing just two batters, Waltrip got the Sooners out of the top half of the inning but the damage had been done as the Jayhawks had built a 7-0 lead.

The Sooners plated one run in the bottom of the first when Matt Oberste's double to right field scored Max White. With Waltrip keeping Kansas at bay from the mound the score would remain 7-1 until the bottom of the fifth when the Sooners produced their own seven-run inning. Starting with a lead off walk by Hunter Haley, Oklahoma's first four batters reached bases safely and the highlight of the inning came when Max White send a three-run blast over the left field fence. Oklahoma would bat through the order in the fifth and Haley, who had started off the inning with a walk, drilled a three-RBI triple into right field, putting the Sooners on top 8-7.

Unfortunately that would be the end of the scoring for Oklahoma while Kansas still had a rally left in them. Plating two runs in the seventh, and then one more in the eighth, the Jayhawks pulled out to a 10-8 lead which would end up being the final.

There was controversy in the bottom of the ninth that appeared to have ended one last rally attempt by Oklahoma. Freshman Anthony Hermelyn led off with a single and then was replaced at first base by pinch runner Justin Burba. Sophomore Colt Bickerstaff then came in to pinch hit, for Garrett Carey, and drilled the ball right at Kansas second baseman Justin Protacio who was interfered with by Burba while on his way to second. Burba was called for runner interference and, assuming there would have been a double-play, the umpires called Bickerstaff out at first as well. The Sooners wen't from potentially having two runners on with no outs to a bases empty, two out situation. Hunter Haley grounded out to Protacio in the next at bat ending the game.

Controversial as it may have been, the game wasn't lost in the ninth inning. You'd need to go back to the horrendous start to the first by Oklahoma's pitching staff to find the culprit for Oklahoma's first conference setback. OU still took two of three games from Kansas, earning their second consecutive conference series win.

The loss put's Oklahoma's season record at 25-5 and 5-1 in conference. They host Oklahoma State, in a non-conference game, on Tuesday night before playing six games in a row on the road against conference opponents Texas (April 5-7) and Baylor (April 12-14).

13 In A Row!

Perfection is highly sought after in the world of athletics and for 3.2 innings on Friday night that's exactly what Jacob Evans was. Coming in to relieve Dillon Overton in the seventh, Evans retired all eleven batters he faced without allowing a hit. He took the mound after Overton allowed his first and only run to score, tying the game at 1-1, and inherited a runner at second with just one out. He got Dakota Smith to ground out and Kevin Kuntz to foul out, starting the string of eleven consecutive retired Jayhawk batters to earn his fifth win of the season.

Oklahoma got on the board in the bottom of the second when Kolby Carpenter went yard to left field. It was his first long-ball of the season, making him the seventh Sooner to hit a home run this season. After Kansas tied the game in the seventh the Sooners were unable to plate another run in regulation, setting up a tenth frame.

Evans made short work of the Kansas batters in the top half of the tenth by retiring them in order. The Sooners then went to work themselves with Hunter Haley, Jack Mayfield, and Craig Aikin loading the bases with singles. Max White popped out, as the fourth batter of the inning, bringing up Matt Oberste who is one of the hottest hitters in baseball. A sacrifice to deep center field provided Oberste his 38th RBI of the season and Oklahoma their 25th win of the season.

Dillon Overton was strong in his start. He allowed just four hits and a single run over his 6.1 innings of work while striking out six Jayhawk batters. On a typical night his performance was more than good enough to earn a win but Kansas' Taylor Thomas was able to match him blow for blow, allowing a run and just five hits in 8.1 innings.

The Sooners improved their conference record to 5-0 and secured their second conference series in as many tries. They'll be going for the sweep of the Jayhawks on Saturday afternoon at 2:00 p.m.

Oberste Makes History, Sooners Crush Jayhawks

It didn't take Matt Oberste long to get his record setting hit on Thursday night. Oklahoma's junior sluggers jumped on the first pitch that was offered by Kansas hurler Frank Duncan and sent it over the left field fence for a three run blast. It would be the 28th consecutive game that Oberste would record a hit it, setting an all-time Oklahoma baseball record. It also started a rout that would give the Sooners their twelfth consecutive victory and place them at 4-0 in conference play.

"I'm glad I got to keep it going, and to hit a home run to extend the hit streak and break the record was just an exclamation point on everything." - Matt Oberste

Oberste's homer put OU up 3-0 at the end of the first and, after adding another run in the bottom of the fifth, the Sooners exploded for four runs in the eighth and four more in the ninth for a 12-1 win. Oklahoma recorded a total of thirteen hits in the game by eight different players and with five of them recording two hits each.

From the mound, Oklahoma's Jonathan Gray was masterful. The Sooners' ace pitched a complete game, fanning 12 of the 29 batters that he faced and allowed just one run to score on two hits. The win improved his season record to 5-1 and lowered his ERA to 1.34 on the season. Most importantly it saved Oklahoma from needing to use the bullpen, thus saving the entire relief staff for the final two games of the series.

The Sooners and Jayhawks play game two of their series Friday night at 6:30 p.m.
