Sooners Pitch Their Way To 8-0, One Win Away From Perfect Weekend

The Sooners faced a thread from the mound on Saturday night in the way of Texas A&M Corpus Christi's Trevor Foss but set the tone early. Oklahoma attacked Foss, who had entered the game having pitched 9 scoreless innings with 15 strikeouts, in the first inning and then held on for a tight finish, thanks to another strong performance by their guys on the mound and some timely hitting.

Foss got off to a bit of a rough start in the game. After striking out Craig Aikin he pegged Jack Mayfield and then let advance to second on a wild pitch. He then gave Max White a free pass, giving Matt Oberste two RBI prospects. After Mayfield and White advanced on a double steal Oberste brought them home with a single up the middle of the infield. The hit extended Oberste's streak to a base knock in all eight games this season and put the Sooners up 2-0.

Foss settled down after the first and only allowed just two of the next fourteen Sooner batters that he faced to reach base over the next four innings. Oklahoma's Jonathan Gray was spectacular during the same span. He didn't allow a base hit until the third inning and didn't get into trouble until the fifth inning and that's where the game tightened.

Zach Taylor led off the fifth with a single and then advanced to second on a sacrifice by Russell Vaughan. Jordan Lee then grounded out to second base but it allowed Taylor to make his way to third. He would come home when the next batter, Cody Stephens, singled up the middle. With the run the Islanders drew to within a run of Oklahoma at 2-1.

Neither team recorded a hit in the sixth inning but Oklahoma put some distance between themselves and the Islanders in the seventh when freshman Hunter Haley scored on a Hector Lorenzana hit that was bobbled by Zach Taylor. The Sooners needed the insurance run because the Islanders would get one back in the bottom of the eighth to draw within a run once again at 3-2.

The Sooners stretched their lead to two runs once again thanks to a couple of Oklahoma's freshmen. Craig Aikin knocked in Justin Burba, who had come in to run for Dylan Neal, to make it 4-2 game. Aikin and Burba weren't the only freshmen to come up huge in the ninth though. Pitcher Jacob Evans retired the side, in order, to preserve a win for the Sooners and keep their season record perfect.

Gray went seven full innings for OU, giving up just the one run off four hits and striking out six batters. No one in the Sooner lineup recorded more than one hit but its fitting that Oklahoma's four RBI were split up between the veteran Oberste and two newcomers to the program. Once again this points to the chemistry that has formed with this squad as they have quickly gelled together as a team.

First pitch in Oklahoma's final game of the Kleberg Bank College Classic is scheduled for 9:30 on Sunday morning. The Sooners will be playing New Mexico, who was upset by Iowa on Saturday.
