Austin was somewhat of a surprise last minute visitor this weekend, one in which the Sooners are holding their first Junior Day, but this news of his commitment isn't much of a surprise. It was pretty well known once word got out that he'd be coming to Norman that if he received an offer he'd very likely commit on the spot. And it appears that is exactly what happened.
He's a little bit undersized at 5'11" 167 pounds, but don't mistake that for an unwillingness to come up in run support. Austin attended one of Oklahoma's summer camps last year and really made a name for himself. He's a player Mike Stoops has kept an eye on ever since and just days away now from National Signing Day, the Sooners finally pulled the trigger with a scholarship offer.
With Aaron Colvin returning and a couple of other underclassmen ahead of him, Austin is a likely redshirt candidate for the 2013 season. However that should be ideal for a guy who could really benefit from spending that year in the weight room. Following that, there is no reason to think he could not compete for playing time as a redshirt freshman in 2014.
Again, his offer list (Indiana, Nevada, Tulsa, and UNLV among others) probably won't impress a lot of you but at this point we have little reason to doubt Mike Stoops' evaluations. All second guessing aside, the Sooners pick up what many consider to be a very underrated prospect and one at a position they certainly needed a commitment from prior to Signing Day.
Welcome to Sooner Nation, Dakota!
