OU Football Recruiting | Sooners Flip Wide Receiver Commit From Cal

SoonerScoop.com

It has to have been a pretty interesting last 24 hours for San Antonio 2013 wide receiver Dannon Cavil. The 6'5" wideout switched his commitment from California to Oklahoma on Monday afternoon. This less than a day after he had told SoonerScoop.com that despite Oklahoma being his "dream school" he would be sticking with his commitment to Cal.

Evidently something changed between then and now as Cavil confirmed the switch via his Twitter account.

As Cavil stated in his tweet, he will be enrolling in the next couple of days because of the fact he's a mid-term enrollee and classes started at Oklahoma on Monday. The obvious side effect of that being he will be in Norman to take part in spring practices. Which, given the Sooners need for receivers who can play on the outside, can only help to increase his chances of potentially seeing the field as a true freshman.

As for his whirlwind recruitment, Cavil was a guy the Oklahoma coaches had their eye on for some after previously attending one of their camps. However, he suffered a hamstring injury that forced him to miss his entire junior season. As a result, the Oklahoma coaches had not seen him play for some time, and though familiar with him prior to the injury, wanted a chance to evaluate his senior film.

Following the somewhat expected loss of Kenny Stills, Oklahoma's need at wide receiver in this 2013 class was altered and an offer the Cavil followed shortly thereafter.

One thing you learn pretty quickly no matter how long you've been following recruiting is that there is never a shortage of interesting twists and turns. Expect even more of those in this one once the recruiting services are able to track down Cavil for an interview to get the details on his last minute change of heart.

As a player, Cavil is the kind of big-bodied wide receiver that Oklahoma really hasn't had since Malcolm Kelly was patrolling Owen Field. As you'd expect for a kid his size, he is a long strider who moves much faster than it would appear when you watch him on film. He uses his size very well to shield defenders and attack the ball at its high point, both of which should continue to be an asset at the next level.

Following the commitment of KJ Young this past weekend, Cavil now becomes Oklahoma's fourth wide receiver in the Sooners 2013 class. Young and Cavil are joined by Austin Bennett (Manvel, TX) and Jordan Smallwood (Jenks, OK) in the class. Barring some kind of unforeseen change, Oklahoma should be done with receivers in this 2013 class. However crazy the circumstances, Oklahoma has landed their 20th verbal commitment for the 2013 class.

Welcome to Sooner Nation, Dannon!
