Are we looking at the Sooners primary backup quarterback? (Photo by Sarah Glenn/Getty Images)
Coach Stoops (and his staff) took part in his favorite way to pass some time today. After a little more than a week of non-media bliss, Stoops and company spoke briefly today to provide an update on where things stand with the team thus far.
Things were said.
I'd be remiss if I started with anything other than Austin Woods. No "breaking news" type of update, aside from the of course fantastic news that his chemo treatments are still going well (or at least as 'well' as poisoning your body can go), but he spoke with the media today and needless to say they came away impressed. How could you not? Crazy respect to this young man for all that he is enduring.
Still no update on the NCAA waiver situations of WR Jalen Saunders or CB Cortez Johnson. Though the prevailing thought seems to be that Saunders could soon win his appeal any day now.
Jay Norvell revealed that he approached Penn State transfer Justin Brown, not the other way around as some might have assumed. Not sure this really affects anything, but some might hear it and not like that OU reached out to him. What's done is done as far as I'm concerned. The coaches continue to rave about his performance in practice.
Stoops said Dom Whaley is back to where he needs to be and that there have been no setbacks since he returned.
Stoops confirmed that Nila Kasitati is back and fully participating in practices this week.
Stoops mentioned that true freshman RB Daniel Brooks has started running again and his rehab is going well, but that certainly does not change the fact that he'll redshirt this year.
Bruce Kittle spoke and made it sound like the tackle position is a three man 'rotation' of sorts. It sounded like Lane Johnson, Daryl Williams, and Tyrus Thompson could all see time at both left and right tackle. Not exactly sure how I feel about that.
In less than encouraging news, it didn't really sound like Kittle had much positive to say about the tight ends. It could have been the setting or just the questions, but he did not offer up much in the way of praise for the position.
Josh Heupel said he'd name a No. 2 quarterback in a couple days, but when pressed on it by the guys at SoonerScoop he was pretty non-committal. I'd be surprised if there is really any kind of "announcement" as opposed to it casually being mentioned at some point. Given all that we've heard, I'll be really surprised if it's not Blake Bell.
