Baseball hasn't been kind to the Sooners over the last week or so and skipper Sunny Galloway is hoping that a few tweaks in the starting rotation will change the luck of the team as well. It's more likely that a bad Air Force team will have plenty to do with changing Oklahoma's fortunes than anything else, but you gotta start somewhere, right?
Damien (Wild Thing) Magnifico will get his second start of the season this evening when the Sooners host Air Force in the first of a two-game series. Magnifico has had his struggles this season but performed admirably in his start against Oregon State. Now OU needs him to mature rapidly and help bring some stability to a pitching staff that is struggling with the second worst ERA (5.16) in the Big XII.
On the season Magnifico has given the Sooners 14 innings of work in which he's surrendered 11 runs on 17 hits while striking out nine batters. He has velocity that can reach triple digits and control that can leave a batter in a coma if he lets one slip too far out of the zone. He currently has a 0-0 record with a 5.79 and two saves on the season.
In Wednesday's game two the Sooners will be throwing righty Drew Harrison. In limited action this season (3.1 innings) he has given up two runs on five hits while also striking out two batters. His ERA currently stands at 5.40 and he has an 0-0 record.
Air Force is returning 19 players from last season's team that ended with a 19-36 overall record. The just ended a nine game losing skid by beating Western Illinois over the weekend and have a 4-12 record so far this season.
The Falcons will be throwing two lefties at Oklahoma starting with Ben Bertelson tonight. For the season Bertelson is 0-3 with a 6.88 ERA. He has given up 14 runs off 15 hits during his 17 innings pitched. He also has recorded 17 strikeouts.
Wednesday Air Force will be throwing Michael Ceci. His ERA currently stands at 3.54 and he has a 1-3 record in his four starts. He's produced 20.1 innings of work and has allowed 14 runs on 25 hits while only striking out 10 batters.
From the plate Air Force is led by Garrett Custons who has a .305 batting average. He's the only player batting above .300 and he has a team high 18 hits and 12 runs scored.
First pitch in the series is this afternoon at 1:00 pm.
